Lotus and Renault’s double association
We already knew that Renault was to be Red Bull and 1Malaysia Racing Team’s engine
supplier. And the latter team has been known as Lotus Racing and it refers to Tony
But today, this just in: Genii Capital and Group Lotus are associating and they create Lotus
Renault GP. This marks the end of certain rumours, but this is not clearing the situation either.
This means that, in 2011, there will be four cars on the grid with the black and gold livery:
Lotus Renault GP (cf. picture above) and Lotus Racing/1Malaysia Racing Team. These will
be two different entities that are in war for a renowned name.
This association is coming with consequences, notably the absence of HP and Lada sponsors
on the livery that was unveiled today. There is also the future confusion that this will bring:
Lotus Renault GP is referring to Renault cars whose main sponsor is Lotus, but with time,
will they be called Lotus instead of Renault?
Has Renault sold its soul? As a matter of fact, there is some logic in the agreement. Since
Briatore and Symonds left the team and Genii Capital have bought it, the livery has
completely transformed, and, as we pointed out, this made people remember the team’s past
with a black and yellow car. The historical reference is going even further today, and we
assist to a Lotus Renault comeback long after it used to be there. The retro-modernized image
is following the hard line that seems to have been established. But on the other hand, all of
this evokes a swing from being a constructor to a motorist. In any case, everyone seems to
find their happiness here. Indeed, Dany Bahar said: “We are Lotus and we are back,” while
Gerard Lopez shows his satisfaction to have attracted “both major sponsorship and new
investment for a very bright future.”
