Welcome to Compliance Monthly!
I hope that everyone’s spring semester is off to a good start. All of our studentathlete’s are back on campus and busy either in the weight room, on the practice
fields and certainly in the classroom. Both men’s and women’s basketball are
heading into the final full month of the conference season and will be hosting
several big games throughout the month. Both track and tennis have already
started their spring seasons, while golf is getting ready to hit the links this month as
well. Finally, the swim team is a little more than a month away from heading to
Texas for the Western Athletic Conference championships. GO LUMBERJACKS!!

While everyone is excited to announce their new incoming class, please
remember that before we publically comment on a PSA, we must first receive a valid
copy of their National Letter of Intent. The Compliance Office will be busy on the
morning of the Wednesday February 2nd, once we receive an NLI, we will send an
email to the coaching staff, sport supervisor, AD and Sports Information office. Until
we send that email out, please don’t comment on a PSA or we will have a violation
of NCAA Bylaw 13.10.2.
Please also note that this is different than the unlimited contact provision of Bylaw
13. You are not allowed to have unlimited contact with your signees until the day
AFTER we have received their valid NLI.
The Athletics Department will be hosting a signing day event at Granny’s Closet
starting at 5:00PM on Wednesday February 2nd, please make plans to join us.

New Legislation Updates & Review Session
The NCAA convention was held in Texas last month. As part of the convention,
new legislation was voted on and there is an entire packet of legislation that is
currently in the override period before it becomes effective on August 1st, 2011. The
compliance office will be holding a review of the new legislation in the conference
room on Tuesday February 15th from 11:00AM – Noon. This will be the first of the
new monthly Compliance Educational Sessions. Our goal is to have at least one
representative from each coaching staff (hopefully more) in attendance each month,
as we will cover a new topic each month. I will be sending out calendar invites over
the next week as we get closer to the review session.

It may seem to be a little early to start talking about initial eligibility for next year’s
incoming class, but NLI Signing Day is next week and summer will be here before you
know it. Please work closely with the Academic Services office now so we are not
scrambling with Eligibility Center issues in late July.
NCAA legislation on “nontraditional coursework” went into effect in 2010, meaning
it will apply to all incoming students this fall. As part of that legislation, courses
from BYU Online and the American School are no longer accepted. If a student
needs an additional core course after graduation, they can still take up to one
additional core (Two half courses) towards their NCAA eligibility. Courses taken at a
Junior College can be accepted as a core, but it must appear on the student’s High
School transcript and must be an approved core course.
If an incoming student does take a “nontraditional course”, please take a look at
Bylaw 14.3.1.2.2 and make sure the course they are taking meets these criteria:

International StudentsInsurance Payments Due

April 1st

Housing Lottery Dates Assigned
Over Email to all On-Campus
Students

February Meetings:
All Staff Meeting

The instructor and student have ongoing access for the purpose of teaching
and evaluating work throughout the duration of the course.
The instructor and student have regular interaction with one another
throughout the duration of the course.
The student’s work, including papers, exams and assignments, are available
for evaluation by the Eligibility Center.
The course has a defined time frame for completion.
The course is open to any student and is placed on the High School transcript
after completion.

Again, if a student needs an additional core course for NCAA eligibility, it is going to
be more difficult to get this year. If we start planning now, it will make things easier
for both you and the coaching staff.
