Shield and Install New Underbody Tunnel Insulator)
Models:
2005 Cadillac STS
with Heat Shield on Exhaust Resonator and
3.6L V6 Engine (VIN 7 -- RPO LY7) Built Prior to July, 2004 or
4.6L V8 Engine (VIN A -- RPO LH2) Built Prior to August, 2004
Condition
Some customers may comment on a buzz type noise heard inside the vehicle. This noise occurs
during driving conditions when the engine is between 2000 and 2200 RPM and is most noticeable
when the vehicle is under a slight load for an extended period of time.
Cause
This noise may be from the exhaust resonator shield rattling.
Correction
Remove the exhaust resonator shield and install the new underbody tunnel insulator using the
procedure listed below.

Raise and support the vehicle.
Remove the 2 bolts and the floor panel tunnel brace from the floor panel.
Suitably support the exhaust system using a adjustable jack stand.
Pry the exhaust system hangers free from the hanger rods.
Lower the exhaust system.
Remove the resonator shield. Pry up the 4 clips securing the shield to the resonator and
remove shield. Bend clips back down flat.

7. Install the new underbody tunnel insulator (1) and secure using retainers.
8. Raise the exhaust system into position and press the hangers over the hanger rods.
9. Install the floor panel tunnel brace and bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 25N·m(18 lb ft).
10. Lower the vehicle.
