RAISING THE BAR
Storahtelling is one of the world’s leading innovators of Jewish Education for all ages – now
taking on the ‘Coming of Age’ ritual. In partnership with the Silverlake Independent Jewish
Community Center (SIJCC) and Hebrew Helpers, Storahtelling brings its successful East Coast
based Raising the Bar program to the Los Angeles community - creating meaningful ways for
rites of passage for the modern family.
We believe it’s time to re-frame the learning process from memorization to an investigation of
Torah and Jewish values. The program is designed to invite B Mitzvah students and their
families to make personal meaning of the narratives and rituals of this family celebration.
The Program
Based on five years of pilot programs with families in New York City, Los Angeles, Jerusalem
and London, Storahtelling approaches the B Mitzvah experience with an innovative,
personalized program that re-imagines the process and product of this milestone moment for
teens and families of all backgrounds, interests and needs.
Raising the Bar provides each family with qualified personal trainers to work with the teen and
all family members over a 12-30 months period and to help craft and lead the public B Mitzvah
celebration at a venue of choice.
Core to the Raising the Bar program is a 13-Step Curriculum developed by top educators that
fits a flexible schedule and works with each family’s unique needs. The program includes
training prior to and following the B Mitzvah event and is comprised of three main areas that
prepare the teen to a lifelong engagement with Jewish life:
1. What’s your Story: Bible/Torah Study – leading to dramatized public performance of Biblical
narrative.
2. It’s About Time: Study of the Jewish calendar and life cycle events
3. Top Ten: interactive examination of Jewish principles and values
The Program includes various learning components, ensuring multiple levels of engaging for the
entire family:
-

One on one sessions with qualified Storahtelling RTB trainers ( est. once a week)

-

Family learning sessions (once a month)

-

Adults only – parent learning salons (several times a year)

-

Teen sessions (once a month)

Rates
RTB rates are based on market research of comparable programs in the Jewish community. Each
family contract reflects the specific needs and circumstances of the B Mitzvah Event.
Collaborators
Hebrew Helpers and the Silverlake JCC are significant assets in this vision, unique to the Los
Angeles area and vital in their contributions. Hebrew Helpers has grown significantly in the past
ten years, providing one-on-one personalized instruction, and coordinating private Bar/Bat
Mitzvah services for families throughout LA. It is known for its strong Hebrew learning program
(learn Hebrew in five lessons!), and “Judaism 101” approach.
The Silverlake Independent JCC is a staple of the Los Angeles community. Serving the growing
needs of the East Side Jewish community, the SIJCC is an invaluable partner. It provides a
gathering space that welcomes Jews, mixed-faith families and those interested in Jewish culture.
As partners, we are able to bring our techniques to SIJCC families, and help incubate this
exciting new venture.
