On his new album
, Lenny
accomplishes the
seemingly imposs
ible
goal of sounding
virtually live, as
if one
extraordinarily am
bidextrous
individual is playin
g it all, and all at
the same time. “If
you turn it up, it
becomes like a wa
ll of sound coming
down on top of
you,” Kravitz
elaborates. “What
I wanted to achiev
e
was one big sound,
a musical collage
made up of many
parts that all com
e
together as a wh
ole. Of course,”
he
adds with typica
l understatement,
“trying to do tha
t by yourself ma
kes it
harder.”

h To Life & Mus

Lenny Kravitz is
a man who is
keeping the classic
roc
Hendrix, Page and k tradition of
Lennon alive. He
has taken a good
deal of flack for
his
mimicry and sid
eburns, but
nevertheless enjoys
commercial and
critical success.

His astonishing

explains “It’s abo

with
yourself, about bei

feel inadequate unl

There may have
been other “retro

rock acts before
him, but Lenny
Kravitz was one
of the first to not
be
pigeonholed to a
single style as he’
s
touched upon suc
h genres as soul,
fun
k,
reggae, hard roc
k, psychedelic, folk
,
and ballads over
the years. Kravitz
was a member of
the California Bo

Choir until his tee
nage years, when
he
decided to pursue
rock & roll while
in
high school and
under the heavily
influence of funk roc
ker Prince. Kravi
tz’s
admiration of the
Purple One was
so
great that he at firs
t patterned his sty

and became kno

(complete with blu

but
failed to land a rec
ording contract.
