Waste Management & Recycling

auStria – FOCUS COUNTRY
OF THE WASTE MANAGEMENT FORUM
Austria’s waste industry is regarded as one of the best in the world due to the high standards of domestic waste management
companies that fulfilled numerous pioneer works. Austrian firms were obliged early in the past because of strict national legislation
to invest in equipment to reduce the environmental impact. The sector consists of more than 3.300 companies. With almost 33,000
employees – two thirds of which are laborer – the sector generates an annual turnover of over EUR 4 billion.
The yearly volume of investments from firms in the waste management business reaches about EUR 260 million. The sector’s
performance can be illustrated through the following numbers: around 9,500 trucks as well as 79,500 containers and troughs are
in use in Austria. There is high demand for qualified employees in the waste management sector: In the course of a year, 2,400 new
jobs have been created.
