overview

This is a course intended to provide a comprehensive coverage of
substation earthing system design for safety and protection
systems. The course provides comprehensive coverage of earthing
system design and protection systems. A simplified coverage of the
basic principles in earthing design, which involve the measurement
and interpretation of soil resistivity, and some simple calculations
for the design of earth resistance for the substation are first
provided.
It is then followed by the operation of the protection systems which
include the operation of protection schemes, such as various circuit
breakers and power system protection relays. The issue of what
constitutes to an adequate design of the earthing and protection
systems will also be addressed.

SPEAKER’S

DR. NORMIZA MOHAMAD NOR received her
degree with First Class Honours in Electrical and
Electronic Engineering from University of Wales,
College of Cardiff, UK in 1996. She obtained the
Ph.D degree in Electrical Engineering from the
same university in 2001. She became a research
fellow for almost a year to Telekom Research and
Development Sdn Bhd to advise on the project
related to earthing systems under high impulsive
currents. She has also delivered a seminar on the
earthing systems and protection to the technical
staff of Malaysia Airport Berhad. She has so far
published 20 international journals and
conferences. She is currently a lecturer of Electrical
Engineering at the Multimedia University,
Malaysia. Her research interests include high
voltage, earthing systems and lightning protection.

PROFILE

DR. KARTIK PRASAD BASU was born in India in 1940. He obtained his
B.E.E., M.E.E. and Ph.D. (Eng.) degrees from the Jadavpur University,
Kolkata, India, in 1961, 1967 and 1974 respectively. He is a Senior
Member of IEEE (USA) and Fellow of IE (India). He worked as Engineer
in Electrical Contractor’s firm and in Power Supply Company in India
for about 4 years. He has the extensive experience of Electrical
Installation works in industries and commercial buildings. He also
gathered working experience of operation and maintenance of High
Voltage Generation, Transmission and Distribution.
Dr. Basu possesses more than 39 years of experience in teaching
Electrical Engineering courses in the area of Electric Power. He
worked in premiere universities in India and Libya in senior teaching
positions and also worked as Chairman of a department for 3 years.
Presently he is working as Associate Professor in the Multimedia
University, Cyberjaya, Malaysia. He is also engaged in valuable
research work and published more than 60 technical papers in
reputed international journals/conference proceedings of USA, UK,
Switzerland and India etc.
Assoc. Prof. Basu was awarded twice with Best Research Paper
Awards. He is also a reviewer of technical papers of some
international journals. In addition, he also worked as consultant to
private companies. Dr. Basu delivered lectures to practicing engineers
in large number of short courses, seminars and workshops in India
and Malaysia.
