On May 28 through June 3, eleven members of our congregation traveled to southern Arizona and
northern Mexico to participate in a BorderLinks educational delegation. We spent two and a half days
south of the border in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico visiting people in homes, factories, churches and
community centers. In Mexico we stayed at El Hogar de Esperanza y Paz (the Home of Hope and
Peace), a community center that provides a nutritious lunch for children from the most impoverished
families in the neighborhood, offers adult education classes, operates a women’s artisan cooperative,
and organizes educational vacation camps for children. We had fun playing with the children. While
in Arizona, we visited Southside Presbyterian Church, spoke with a young man who had been
detained for six months, visited Immigration Customs Enforcement (I.C.E) officers, volunteered with
Humane Borders and watched seventy five migrants sentenced in federal court.

Summary of the Stated Session Meeting, June 20, 2011
The Session of First Presbyterian Church met on Monday, June 20, 2011 at 5:30 pm in the Session Room. Thirteen
Elders were present.
Minutes from the Called Meeting on May 8 and the Stated Meeting on May 9 were approved as distributed.
The Moderator led a study of Matthew 11:16-30.
Elder Jon Crawford shared his faith story.
The following communications were reported: A note of thanks from Molly Neff was received and read. Additionally,
the Moderator read selected areas of correspondence from the Presbytery of St. Andrew, noting July 10, 2011 as the
official date for changing the form of government in the Book of Order. The Moderator recommends that we spend the
next couple of months looking at our Standards of Procedure and possibly have something revised to approve once Rev.
Semmes returns from his sabbatical. Further, the Moderator will read through the information and bring some revisions
to our standards of procedure for discussion in further detail at the August meeting.

Baptism of Lucille Pannell Thompson, daughter of Mary and Scott Thompson, September 11, 2011, 11:00 am.

Approval nunc pro tunc of communion served by Rev. Scanlon along with Deacon Clinette Conlee to Anna Dell
Pettit and her daughter, Nancy Rogers, Sunday, June 19, 2011.
A motion was made and approved unanimously to support the proposed banner for our 175th anniversary celebration, as
designed by Stephanie Goodwiller.
Ministry Team reports are, as follows:
Finance: Elder Ruthann Ray gave an update on our financial status through May, 2011. Additionally, Elder Susan
Shaw noted the purchase of the new ACS system. Motion was made and approved unanimously to redeem a certificate
of deposit at Oxford-University Bank and deposit in an interest-bearing account at Community Trust Bank. The
signatures for this account will be the treasurer and financial secretary of First Presbyterian Church.
Property: Motion was made and approved unanimously to loan our 25-passenger bus to Camp Hopewell for a trip to
northwest Georgia July 18-21. Further, last month’s decision to allow the Doors of Hope social worker to share the
office of Mary Edith Walker will be revisited.
Membership/Hospitality: A new photo directory is being planned for September, with Brandall Atkinson taking the
pictures.
Mission: Elder Hale Freeland gave a report on the recent BorderLinks mission trip to Arizona / Mexico, which had a
diverse age group and worked out well. Twenty participants have signed up for the Haiti mission trip in November.
Children’s Christian Education: A group of 27 youth recently visited Montreat, North Carolina. Vacation Bible
School will begin on July 11.
Capital Campaign Task Force: Julie Field has agreed to head up identifying the physical needs component of our
capital campaign.
General Announcements: The next Session meeting will be August 8, 2011 at 5:30 pm in the Session Room.
The Lord’s Prayer: The Session recited The Lord’s Prayer and adjourned at 6:45 pm.

July brings a well deserved rest for the Chancel Choir. Soloists will provide music for
worship during July. I want to express my gratitude to each member of the Chancel Choir for
their dedication and hard work this past year. The Chancel Choir offers inspiring music for
worship Sunday after Sunday and great concerts for the church and community. I hope you
will also share your appreciation with them.
The last week of June, I will be in Greensboro, NC for the American Guild of Organists
regional convention. This is a continuing education event, with numerous workshops offered
in addition to the opportunity to hear great organists and great organs.

Mission

In the 1990’s our congregation became involved in outreach programs in Leogane, Haiti.
Members made several trips to Haiti working primarily at Hospital Ste. Croix, a
community hospital jointly supported by the PCUSA and the Haitian Episcopal Church.
Since the earthquake in January 2010, the epicenter of which happened to be Leogane,
there has been a renewed interest in re-connecting with the Haitian community. To that
end, a group of approximately twenty FPC members will travel to Leogane this
Thanksgiving. Volunteers will be working at a local elementary school, a hospital, and
an orphanage. Check out this column in the next several months to learn more of these
different programs and ways in which YOU can participate!
Henri Christophe School is an elementary school located in the small village of
Darbonne, several miles from Leogane. The school was destroyed by the earthquake, but
has been rebuilt on two acres donated by the school superintendent, Abelard Xavier.
There are now 125 students in grades K-6, attending classes September through May.
During our visit this fall, members from FPC will be working with the teachers and
students. Abelard has begun the construction of a six bedroom guest house for
volunteers, as the school continues to grow. You may go to haitipartners.org and type

In returning to Haiti, our intent is not only to lend assistance on the ground, but to build
an enduring partnership that will be mutually beneficial to all. In the coming months
there will be opportunities for anyone to participate in the process. If you have specific

The Food Pantry

If You Would Like to Volunteer at the Food Pantry in July,
We Have a Job for You!
On Tuesdays in July, Pantry volunteers are needed to stock and organize the shelves,
unpack boxes, help unload supplies from the truck and package snack bags and fresh
vegetables (generally in the morning but sometimes in the afternoons).
On Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-11:00 am, volunteers are needed to shop
with the clients.
This is a wonderful mission of our church each July and we would love to have you
anytime – even if only for an hour. Contact Lele Gillespie at 662-801-5077 or

Additional Pantry Needs
The Pantry needs screeners and screener substitutes (screening
takes place on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 - 11:00 am)
and home-bound delivery volunteers and substitutes (deliveries
take place once a month at the convenience of the volunteer).
Anyone interested should call Ann O’Dell at 234-2907.

Christian Education

Bible Study Resumes
Disciple Bible Study, Year IV, will meet on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 am in
the Session Room, August 17 through December 14. Topics this year will include
Wisdom Literature (Psalm, Proverbs, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes) plus some other
Old Testament books such as Ruth, Ezra and Nehemiah. In the New Testament,
we’ll study the Gospel and letters of John, James and Revelation. Leaders for this
study are Mary and David Freeman and Mary Edith Walker.
This class is open to anyone who has taken a previous Disciple Bible Study class.
There is a $40.00 charge for the manual. Year IV is the final year of the study. If
you would like to participate, please contact Mary Edith Walker (234-1757 or
mwalkerfpc@bellsouth.net) no later than July 11.

Adult Sunday School in August
Come to adult Sunday School August 14, 21 and 28 to hear four of our
members share with us ways to save our money and save our earth. These
classes will meet in Fellowship Hall at 9:45 am each Sunday:
August 14 - Keith Hayward - cutting energy costs in your home
August 21 - Melissa Hall and John T. Edge - eating locally grown food
August 28 - Hayden Alexander - being green in your garden

Grace Academy Classes

The CPR class will be rescheduled at a later date this summer. Registration and a $15
fee are required for this class. Please call the church office to sign up and express your
interest.

Coming this fall:
Wednesdays Together, dinner and a selection of classes on Wednesday evenings,
beginning September 14 through November 9.
Myth and Metaphor: Will discuss how Joseph Campbell may help us read the Bible.
Viewing a DVD, the class will consider the meaning of themes found frequently in all
cultures. This discussion will be led by Ann O’Dell on Tuesdays at noon, beginning in
October through November.

In June, 26 of our youth attended the summer Montreat Conference in North Carolina. We had
an amazing trip! We enjoyed a week full of worship, keynotes, Bible studies, rock hopping,
singing, dancing and, of course, tons of laughter. If you run into one of the youth pictured
above, please feel free to stop them and ask about the trip. They have plenty to share!

I thank the congregation, the parents, as well as the youth. Many worked so hard and we all
benefitted from another amazing summer in Montreat!

"lucky" until I experienced a major miracle on May 23.
Acute heart attack symptoms occurred on a garden tour with
a nurse friend who immediately took me for medical
attention. A blocked artery was flushed, stent inserted,
and I'm better than new.

First Presbyterian Church
Our town, Oxford, Mississippi, was incorporated in May, 1837; and within two months, Oxford
Presbyterians planted that small seed of faith. We might liken their faith to a grain of mustard seed.
In Matthew, Chapters 8 and 17, Jesus is concerned about the disciples’ lack of faith. Jesus tells us that
even if our faith is small – even the size of a mustard seed – it can grow. These early Oxford settlers
wanted to establish a Presbyterian Church where their faith could grow…
Starting with the following words, First Presbyterian Church of Oxford, Mississippi, was established
on Saturday, July 15, 1837: “Agreeably to a notice previously given, a meeting was held in this place
on Saturday the 15th day of July, A.D. 1837 for the purpose of organizing a Presbyterian Church.”
On that Sunday a sermon was delivered by Mr. Daniel L. Gray who read from 1 Kings 18:21. So,
with these blessings, the Oxford Presbyterian Church became one of the first to organize ministry in
our newly chartered Town of Oxford.
Those grains of mustard seeds – the smallest of all the seeds on earth – began to grow. In Mark 4:31 –
32, we learn that when this smallest of seed is sown, it grows to become “….the greatest of all
shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its
shade.” (NRSV)
This month we are ready to begin celebrating the 175th anniversary year of Oxford’s First Presbyterian
Church. That tiny seed has indeed become the greatest of branches, serving as a nesting place for our
community of believers. We have a lot to celebrate, including the future of our church.
Become involved with us as we begin our year of celebration. Our theme of FAITH – PRAYER –
CELEBRATION (FPC) is a call to all of us to prayerfully consider how our faith can grow during
this 175th anniversary year of celebration.
Please share this time with us, throughout the July, 2011 – July, 2012 year of recognition, ending with
a Church Banquet on Saturday, July, 14, 2012, at the Inn at Ole Miss and a Birthday party on Sunday,
July 15, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church.
Thank you for allowing me to Chair our 175th Anniversary celebrations. I am honored that our pastor
John Semmes has asked me to coordinate our efforts. I am also overwhelmed by the talents of our
church family. Please consider sharing your talents in some way with all of us. We look forward to
celebrating with you.

175th Anniversary Committee

until the present are requested. The 175th Anniversary Steering Committee is preparing
many informative and useful items for you during the year of celebration from July, 2011July, 2012. We need your help in locating as many photos, articles, clippings, celebratory
programs and bulletins, videos and artistic renderings as possible. Anything you are
willing to share will be copied and/or safely displayed and returned to you. You may

Each month in our FPC newsletter, we will enjoy special celebratory words from
members of our church. Some writers will be children; others may be members who
are 6th and 7th generation FPC family; and others may be members who share their
thoughts about our church. I hope you will take time to enjoy these words of
celebration.
For July, 2011, the first installment of our words of faith are from Mrs. Lynton Dilley,
who has been a member of our church since 1956.

Lynton Dilley’s Presbyterian Life
in Oxford Mississippi
Approximately seven years ago I stood before the congregation of this church and delivered much the same
message as written below. However, on that particular Sunday it was on behalf of stewardship. For this
occasion, I have attempted to describe how I have used my gifts and abilities that the church has provided for
me from 1958 to the present time.
In 1956, the Dilley family (Norman, Lynton, Larry-age 6, Jim-age 7 months) moved to Oxford, Mississippi,
and immediately became involved in activities at First Presbyterian Church. As a couple, we were active in
the Couple’s Club which met monthly in the church basement for dinner (provided by the University of
Mississippi Catering Service) and fellowship. I became a member of the Lula Gregory Circle. The next year
the Circle split into two groups; the second group became Circle Seven and I became its first leader. A few
years later, the Circle was re-named Carroll Barr after her death.
In May 1958, our third son, John, was born. Three months later my husband died. This church provided
critical support to get me through a very difficult time. Members of the congregation rocked my baby,
provided activities for the two older children, fed us numerous meals, and found good household help for us so
I could go to work. I felt such warmth and compassion that I said to myself, “This is the church for us.” That
is why I became a member of this church.
In these intervening years, I have found this church body to be a place of encouragement for it has given me
the opportunity to use what gifts and abilities I have. In the area of education, I taught Vacation Bible School
and Sunday School. I also served as assistant superintendent and superintendent of Sunday School. During
that time, with the assistance of the teachers, we produced a monthly Sunday School newsletter.
In church government I have served as deacon after which I was elected elder and served on the Session at
various times. As chairman of the Christian Education Committee, the members of the committee wrote a
curriculum guide for the Sunday School teachers which was used for a number of years. As chairman of the
Witness Committee, I served on the Interfaith Compassion Ministry Board in its early years. Frequently, I
have served on various other committees such as Long Range Planning for sanctuary and chancel renovations,
building of the Fellowship Hall, and consultant for the design of the previous playground.
Additionally, I occasionally served as liturgist for Sunday morning worship service. More recently, I was the
leader of the Over 55/VIP group for several years and also transported the elderly to church when needed.
Currently, I am a member of the Personnel Ministry Team.
I give credit to this church for the Christian nurturing of my children and for the love and support it gives to all
as well as to those in special time of great need. Indeed, I have gained more than I have given.

For the second time in my church life at First Presbyterian I have felt that same warmth and compassion that
was given to me fifty-three years ago. In early April of this year after a misstep resulting in a somewhat
serious fall, this church immediately came to my rescue. With prayers, cards, food, flowers, and calls, I was
able to resume my regular activity in a relatively short period of time. My thanks to you all and may God be
with you always.
