 Introduction to the scientific fundamentals of grounding systems and
potential difference and voltage. High voltage systems and static
electrical charge

Roy “Chip” Whitten
Chip joined Lyncole Technical Services after a
twenty-year career in the United States Marine Corps.
His military experience includes six years as an engineer
in the field of aviation electronics working with
communication / navigation equipment, three years as
an engineering instructor, two years as an engineering
programs auditor and nine years managing a team of 70
plus engineers.
Since joining Lyncole Technical Services in May of 1997,
Chip has been responsible for the project management
of numerous on going contracts with large and small
communications and commercial companies and has
developed multiple procedures for grounding and
protection of electrical equipment. As the Senior
Applications Engineer, Chip’s responsibilities include
performing design calculations, auditing and
maintaining manufacturing and quality assurance
procedures, performing on-site testing, complete site
grounding surveys, turnkey installations, lightning
damage evaluations and providing total site protection
recommendations to our clients.
As Education Specialist, Chip is responsible for Lyncole’s
training efforts. Drawing on his 14 years of field and
education experience, Chip conveys enthusiasm, and
professionalism while instructing Lyncole’s public and
private courses. He receives nothing but outstanding
reviews and has been instrumental in educating of
thousands of technicians, designers, engineers, and
company owners on all aspects of Inside and Outside
Plant Grounding and Site Protection procedures.

o Overview of typical grounding system installations including process
piping bonding, plumbing system bonding, power system earth
conductors, anti-static floors, earth bars in open equipment areas,
earth tags on process vessels, earth rods, buried earth tape,
reinforcing steel in buried concrete foundations and structural steel
earth bonds. Review these with the aid of diagrams, drawing and
photographs
o Describe the main requirements outlined in the standards. Highlight
what the main standards are (IEC). Outline the basic requirements as
described in the standards - risk evaluation, system design, installation
details, testing and documentation
o Introduction to calculations applicable to these systems. Consider the
various scenarios that require calculations to be carried out.
Calculation of currents, energy and conductor sizes
o Review in detail the requirements described in the earthing system
standards. Explain how earthing is essential for safe and correct power
system operation. Revise the operation of three phase systems with
a earthed star point. Study the path for earth leakage and fault
currents. Look at protection devices for dealing with earth faults residual current devices, earth fault relays. Review the design and
operation of typical systems that are installed in process facilities
o Review in detail the content of the lightning protection standards.
Explain the evaluation process - risk calculation, lightning strike
probabilities and building size factors. Overview of the protection
techniques applicable to structural protection of buildings. Explain how
these protection systems operate and their physical make up
o Address the protection of electronic systems such as data networks,
phone systems and control system installations. Understand how
lightning surge protection is implemented on a practical level. Explain
how lightning surge protection devices are fitted on
instrument/signal/control cables
o Practical sessions with earth test equipment. Running of test leads
understanding the technical operation instructions and interpreting
the results.

Overview of the requirements for as built drawings, record
documentation, inspection and testing of earth and lightning
protection systems

Chip is a certified LPI Journeyman Lightning Protection
Installer and holds a Master’s Certificate in Applied
Project Management.
