Event Background Information:
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh will be hosting an MLK Day of Service event on
January 16, 2012, in an effort to honor Dr. King’s legacy. Approximately 250 volunteers from all
across the City will come together to volunteer on 11 projects around the area including home
repair, painting, community center repair, and vacant building cleaning projects. Every
volunteer will be asked to come with at least one item to donate to the Greater Pittsburgh
Community Food Bank when they arrive. Community Leaders, Habitat for Humanity of Greater
Pittsburgh’s Executive Director Maggie Withrow, representative from the Mayor’s Office and a
representative from the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank will all be speakers.

Media Outreach:
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh will be responsible for sending out media alerts, press
releases, Public Service Announcements and getting bloggers, TV news reporters, and newspaper
reporters at the event.
Partnerships:
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh is partnering with Pittsburgh Cares, a volunteer networking
“hub”. Pittsburgh Cares will help facilitate project requests and help in advertising the event.
HFHGP will also work with community organizations, community centers, residents, local community
members, and local businesses in order to have a successful Day of Service. All donors and sponsors will
be recognized via the following: T-shirt recognition, program materials, event signage, on the HFHGP
website, and both January and February 2012 e-newsletters.
