Chosun Academy
Newsletter: New and
Improved!

Word of the Week: AWARENESS
uh-wair-nis: noun Having or showing realization, perception, or knowledge.
Summer is here! It’s an important time to be aware of
your surroundings, health, and thoughts. The days are
longer and hotter, so you need to be aware of the time.
In the winter, you can tell when it’s time for dinner
and bedtime because the sun sets earlier. In the
summer, many of us go to bed when it’s still light, so
if you’re feeling tired or hungry, it may be later than
you think. You also need to be aware of how hot it is
so you can be sure to drink plenty of water.
Not going to school and having a regular schedule can
make you feel lazy. Try to make time every day for
physical and mental activities. Learning is just like
martial arts — it takes practice. Perhaps during the
really hot part of the day, you can read or study for
30 minutes to stay aware of what you will need when you
go back to school. Have fun this summer, but stay aware
of what’s around you.

Be Aware of the Eye of the Tiger
When the musical group Survivor released a single called “Eye of the Tiger,” Sylvester
Stallone requested that it be Rocky III’s theme song, after they were unable to get permission
to use Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust.” Since the song’s release, there have been several
definitions for “eye of the tiger,” including one relating to awareness.

Awareness is related to many other words, including the following:

Conscious
Sensible
Mindful
Alert

Being conscious applies to being aware of a physical feeling or a sensation. Being sensible is
being aware of something that is not expressed; a person just knows. Being mindful is having
awareness or knowledge of something, especially through personal experience. Being alert is
about what a person can feel, see, hear, touch, or taste.
Even Mahatma Gandhi knew the importance of being aware: “They who lack talent expect things to
happen without effort. They ascribe failure to a lack of inspiration or ability, or to
misfortune, rather than to insufficient application. At the core of every true talent there is
an awareness of the difficulties inherent in any achievement, and the confidence that by
persistence and patience something worthwhile will be realized. Thus talent is a species of
vigor.”

Quotes on Awareness
“Always bear in mind that your own
resolution to succeed is more important
than any other.”
- Abraham Lincoln
“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile
because it happened.”
- Theodor Seuss Geisel

“Be yourself; everyone else is already
taken.”
- Oscar Wilde
“By three methods we may learn
wisdom: First, by reflection, which is
noblest; second, by imitation, which is
easiest, and third by experience, which is
the bitterest.”
- Confucious
