Dear Jim Hiser and USA Racquetball Site Selection
Committee Members,
We are delighted you are considering Greater Des
Moines as the host city for the 2013 USAR 40th National
Junior Olympic Championships.
You’re in good company. Annually, about 1,000 sporting events choose Des Moines
as their ideal location, allowing half a million visitors to enjoy Iowa’s capital city.
As you leaf through these pages, you will discover why Des Moines is a leading
destination for sporting events. The city’s central U.S. location and low cost per diem
are always appealing to sports planners and families. Many extraordinary attractions
and special events - plus entertainment, shopping and fine dining - offer every
diversion imaginable for visitors.
We are also committed to:
• Providing a free 10 court facility - Oakmoor Racquet & Fitness Club
• A $1,000 sponsorship that will be provided upon arrival in the city
• 5 complimentary hotel rooms during the championships
• Volunteer help at check-in/on-site registration
• Marketing and Promostions to help enhance the championship experience
• Complimentary site visit for up to 2 USA Racquetball staff members
Sincerely,
Greg Edwards

Jim Hiser
Executive Director
1685 West Uintah St., Ste. 103
Colorado Springs, CO 80904-2906
Dear Jim Hiser and members of the Site Selection Committee:
I am honored to invite the USAR 40th National Junior Olympic Championships to Des Moines in 2013.
There is no better place to experience the true heartland than in Iowa’s
capital city. In Des Moines, you’ll discover an array of attractions and
entertainment in a setting that boasts a rich history, a thriving present and
a very bright future. The arts and cultural opportunities here are second
to none; in 2009 one of the largest outdoor sculpture gardens in the world
opened to the public in downtown Des Moines. The Principal Riverwalk
continues to complete various phases, most recently the Center Street
Bridge which helps connect 100s of miles of trails throughout the area.
Your athletes, coaches and fans will at once feel comfortable and welcome in Des Moines as Oakmoor is a beautiful Fitness Center with amazing facilities and located just down the street from one of our major shopping malls. During your free time, experience the excitement of the city or
explore rural Iowa’s charming beauty, just minutes away. As you will see
throughout our bid, Des Moines is surrounded by fabulous communities that
truly embrace amateur athletics.
Of all the reasons you may chose our city, let me share the most important
one: community. Des Moines is a remarkable city of thoughtful and productive people. The National Junior Championships in 2013 are important
to us, and we want to ensure its success.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
T.M. Franklin Cownie, Mayor
City of Des Moines, Iowa
A Warm Welcome to Des Moines
USA Racquetball

Colorado Springs, CO 80904-2906
May 9, 2012
Dear USA Racquetball,
On behalf of the Oakmoor Fitness Club, the Iowa Racquetball Association, our many junior
players and their coaches, the reater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau (GDMCVB)
and the Des Moines Area Sports Commission (DMASC) we respectfully submit this bid to host
the 2013 USAR 40th National Junior Olympic Championships. The Oakmoor Fitness Club and
the City of Des Moines invite you to explore all that we have to offer.
To that end, the GDMCVB and the DMASC have offered to provide two USA Racquetball staff
members with an all-expense paid site visit. In addition, the bureau has offered a $1,000
sponsorship of the event. Please see tab 1 of this proposal.
Before your visit, let us give you a taste of what you’ll find.
The Oakmoor Advantage
With 10 courts, Oakmoor is one of the Midwest’s most popular tournament venues. Featuring
two stadium courts, Oakmoor’s events regularly draw players from across Iowa, Missouri,
Illinois, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska, Wisconsin and South Dakota. During the last 5 events
held at our club, participants averaged 200 per tournament. More importantly, Oakmoor is a
popular venue for junior players. During our 2012 Spring Invitational, we had over 40 juniors
aged 4 to 18.
Oakmoor’s stadium courts are considered the jewels of competitive racquetball in Iowa. Along
the back side, 80 spectators are able to watch two games at once, while the seating area adjacent
to the side wall of court #1 provides space for 80 additional viewers.
The gallery style of Oakmoor’s eight other courts is ideal for junior events; the open balcony
is perfect for younger players receiving encouragement from coaches, parents and their
fellow players.
A Warm Welcome to Des Moines
The Oakmoor Advantage, cont.
Club amenities include a 30’ X 60’ indoor swimming pool, three hot tubs, two saunas, two
steam rooms, a bar, lounge, a full-sized basketball court and more than 100 exercise machines
and free weight stations. Day care, laundry and towel services are also available. To learn more,
visit www.oakmoorfitness.com.
The full sized gymnasium is adjacent to the stadium courts and is ideal for exhibitors and
vendors. In addition, the club’s location is also ideal as there are numerous restaurants and over
five hotels within walking distance, one of which has an indoor water park
The Des Moines Difference
We are well aware that the selection committee has a number of venues from which to choose
for this important event. And we welcome the competition! After all, the future of our sport lies
with our junior players. The more clubs bidding to host a juniors event, the better!
The question is, why Des Moines?
Let us start with a sort of “evangelical” appeal. Though few expect a return to the racquetball
heyday of the 1980’s anytime soon, the sport does appear to be alive and well in many larger
cities, especially those on the coasts. In the Midwest, however, racquetball advocates have
difficulty drawing attention to this “underground” sport. We know that a good coach can make
all the difference to a young player. But a national event like this can make a world of
difference to an entire generation of players. For our sport to survive in the heartland, a
Midwestern city such as Des Moines needs to host this event.
In addition to investing in the future of the sport in the Midwest, hosting the 2013 USAR Junior
National Championships makes sound economic sense. Please see tabs 4 and 6. Based on hotel,
dinning, and labor rates, Des Moines was recently ranked two years in a row as the most
affordable city to host a tradeshow. In this economy, that means a lot, especially if the goal is
to maximize registration rates. A four-night stay for a family of four in Des Moines is certainly
more appealing than the prospect of visiting a more expensive city.
Des Moines’ central location offers another advantage to hosting this national event. Please
see tab 3. Located at the junction of U.S. Interstates 80 and 35, getting to Des Moines by car
couldn’t be easier. It’s also important to note that St. Louis, home to one of the strongest high
school racquetball programs in the country, is only a 5.5 hour drive from Des Moines, while
Chicago, Kansas City, Minneapolis, and Omaha are even closer. As for air service, 125 flights
arrive and leave the Des Moines International Airport daily. In addition, the airport serves 17
major U.S. cities with direct flights.

Finally, Des Moines is among the most family friendly cities in the country. Voted “All American City” for the 5th time in 2010, Des Moines became just the 6th city since the award
began in 1949 to be honored five times. Des Moines has hundreds of activities for families with
children of all ages. Please see tab 7 and 8. Whether you’re into amusement parks, science
exhibits, zoos, sculpture gardens or shopping, Des Moines has it all. And everything is within a
30 minute drive from Oakmoor—perfect for the “down times” between matches.
Thank you for considering Oakmoor Fitness Club and the City of Des Moines as the site to
host the 2013 USAR 40th National Junior Olympic Championships. We hope that you take
advantage of the all-expense paid visit to our club and our city. Come and see all that we
have to offer!

CONNECT. Meet in Des Moines.
The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) will work with USA Racquetball (USAR) to
adhere to your standards and promote the event in a championship manner.
We will work with the Iowa Racquetball Association and their resources to promote the event,
promote the experience in Des Moines, Why Des Moines and what we have to offer.
We will work with the Iowa Games and Iowa Sports Foundation to promote these championships
We will work to make sure their websites have clear information about the championships on
their front page. We will make sure that their link is on our website and other pertinent
racquetball sites to promote these championships.
We will work with the USAR and your website to provide information about the area and
promote the experience that athletes, coaches and fans will have at these championships in
Des Moines.
We will work with The Iowa Sports Connection, a company dedicated to “Promoting positive
participation in youth sports by recognizing active Iowans from the Pee-Wees to the Preps to the
Pros”. They distribute a monthly magazine in Casey’s General Stores and we will work with them
on a racquetball piece for their June issue. In addition, The Iowa Sports Connection website,
e-mail newsletters and weekly talk shows will offer opportunities for local to talk about the sport
of racquetball and this great event.
The CVB staffs information tables at 100s of events throughout the year and can distribute
appropriate information at each.
The Greater Des Moines Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) and the Des Moines Area Sports
Commission (DMASC) are committed to using technology to promote the 2013 USAR 40th
National Junior Olympic Championships. We will work at promoting the event on our website,
our facebook sites, our twitter accounts and through e-mail blasts.
• Starting shortly after the bid is awarded, we will formulate a “Welcome brochure” that can
be e-mailed to all 2012 and past participants that talks about “Why Des Moines” and
• provides contact information
• Leading up to the championships, we will develop e-Blasts that talk about Things to Do,
Restaurants, Dining, and Hotels that can be sent to wrestling clubs/teams/past participants
providing more information on the area
We are also committed to:
• Using the Sports Media datbase list on the following page to distribute information to media
outlets in the state
• Once the event is booked, the event will be located on the CVB Calendar of Events
page and we will work to have our website www.seedesmoines.com located on as many
racquetball sites as possible
• Lastly, we are open to ideas

With 10 courts, Oakmoor is one of the Midwest’s most
popular tournament venues. Featuring two stadium courts,
Oakmoor’s events regularly draw players from across Iowa,
Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska, Wisconsin and
South Dakota. During the last 5 events held at our club,
participants averaged 200 per tournament. More
importantly, Oakmoor is a popular venue for junior players.
During our 2012 Spring Invitational, we had over 40 juniors
aged 4 to 18.
Club amenities include a 30’ X 60’ indoor swimming pool,
three hot tubs, two saunas, two steam rooms, a bar, lounge,
a full-sized basketball court and more than 100 exercise
machines and free weight stations. Day care, laundry and
towel services are also available.
A full sized gymnasium is adjacent to
the stadium courts and is ideal
for exhibitors and vendors.
Oakmoor Racquet &
Fitnesss Club
CONNECT. PLAY in Des Moines.
Oakmoor’s stadium courts are considered the jewels of
competitive racquetball in Iowa. Along the back side, 80
spectators are able to watch two games at once, while the
seating area adjacent to the side wall of court #1 provides
space for 80 additional viewers. The gallery style of Oakmoor’s
eight other courts is ideal for junior events; the open balcony
is perfect for younger players receiving encouragement from
coaches, parents and their fellow players.
DO MORE.
Meet and Stay in Des Moines.
Whether it’s a sporting event, trade show or simply a visit, we know
the visitor wants value and we deliver.
No matter what part of the city you stay in, your accommodations
will be close to your event facilities with rates ranging from $89 - $129.
Des Moines was recently named the most affordable U.S. city to hold
tradeshows in, according to Tradeshow Week magazine, based on
domestic hotel and labor rates, as well as the cost of
restaurant meals.
While part of the reason for the ranking is due to the city’s
affordability, Des Moines’ central location, accessible hotel rooms
and number of meeting facilities are also primary reasons sports
planners choose to hold their event here.
Upon arrival in this five-time, “All-American City,” you will be
impressed by the area’s friendly people, welcoming atmosphere
and outstanding quality of life. Hospitality is abundant in Greater Des
Moines – the political, economic and cultural center of Iowa. The
metropolitan area has retained its charm and preserved its history
while offering all the amenities of a large city including shopping,
sports, attractions and the arts.
Enjoy a restful night’s sleep whether you stay at one of our full-service
hotels or a local bed and breakfast. Greater Des Moines has over 100
accommodations to choose from offering more than 10,000 rooms.
