It is an honor to
serve each of the
more than 2,000
Rotarian members
of the 49 Rotary
Governor Rick clubs throughout
Central Florida as
your District Governor for the Rotary year
2012-13.
Before launching into expectations for
this next year, allow me to compliment
Immediate Past District Governor Art
Brown on an exceptionally successful
year.
In my opinion, I have assembled the best
possible team of AG’s, Committee Chairs
and Committee Members to carry out the
sole purpose of the district which is “to
serve the clubs”.
We have a great group of new club Presidents that have gone through tremendous
training in order to help make their club a
more effective Rotary club.
My theme for the District this year is
“Rotary First”. It’s the concept of making
Rotary the centerpiece of what we, as

clubs stand for. Our loyalties should first
be to our members, then our club and
then Rotary International.
With every new Rotary year come new
goals and objectives. Our goal is for every
club to achieve the RI Presidential Citation. By achieving the Presidential Citation, the clubs will be stressing the importance of both membership and continued support of Rotary programs and the
Rotary Foundation while simultaneously
supporting the priorities and goals identified within the RI Strategic Plan:
strengthen clubs, increase humanitarian
service, and enhance public image. To
accomplish these goals, your club President will need the support and cooperation of the club Board and the members.
I look forward to the year ahead, and to
supporting the clubs with their efforts to
further the Object of Rotary. Let us also
strive to carry forth the theme of Rotary
International President Tanaka which is
“Peace through Service”

Rick Baines
Richard A. Baines
District Governor 2012-2013

July is Literacy Month

Question 1.
Can a Club President
vote on a motion before
the board?

For many years, Rotarians
have been active in efforts
to reduce illiteracy, from
building schools and paying salaries of teachers to
serving as tutors to collecting and distributing books
and audiovisual materials
to libraries. Rotarians are
working with governments
to create large-scale repli-

cable literacy projects in the developing world.
The RI Board of
Directors has designated July as
Literacy Month, a
perfect time for Rotary clubs to develop their own literacy
projects as well as raise awareness of Rotarian efforts
worldwide to eradicate illiteracy.

The Rotary Leadership Institute
The Rotary Leadership
Institute is a grassroots,
multi-district organization
whose purpose is to assist
the clubs within its member districts with the leadership development of its
members. This is done
primarily with a curriculum designed to enhance
the overall Rotary experience of Rotarians and provide assistance helping the
clubs run effectively. RLI
is not a seminar. All
courses are led by trained
facilitators who lead discussion. They do not lecture.

District 6980 will host three
RLI events in 2012-13 but
any Rotarian can attend any
RLI event within the Sunshine Division (Georgia,
Florida and the Caribbean).

August 25 – The Villages
Charter High School

November 10-11 – On
board the Monarch of the
Seas during the District Conference Cruise

March 30, 2013 – Hagerty High School, Oviedo

A Rotary Leadership Institute
newsletter will be sent to all
Rotarians within the Sunshine Division each month
around the 20th with complete
information and details;
schedule of future events,
how to register, etc.
Best wishes for a most outstanding Rotary year ahead!
Randy Rawiszer PDG
RLI District Director 2010-13

Question 2.

RLI Sunshine Division Executive Committee 2012-14

What month is Rotary
Foundation Month?

The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International
Each Rotary district in the
world has a District Rotary Foundation Committee
made up of volunteers
who have expertise in specific Rotary Foundation
programs. The purpose of
the committee is to assist
the clubs within the district with their promotional, educational and
fundraising efforts for the
Foundation. One of the
committee’s most important roles is to encourage and assist the clubs
with their active participation in Rotary Foundation programs.

Randy Rawiszer
District Rotary
Foundation Chairman

The Rotary Foundation is
the charitable arm of Rotary International. The
Foundation is run by Rotarians, for Rotarians, and
is supported primarily by
Rotarians. It is truly our
Foundation and all Rotarians have a vested interest
in it.

It is encouraged that all
clubs have The Rotary
Foundation at the top of
their club’s charitable giving list for this Rotary
year.
In an effort to foster better understanding of The
Rotary Foundation and its
life changing dynamic
programs, there will be a
monthly District Rotary
Foundation Committee
Newsletter sent to all Rotarians in D-6980 around
the 10th of each month.
We will hold our District
Rotary Foundation Seminar on September 8 at
Valencia College (West
Campus) where we will
provide educational and
program support to all
who require it.
Finally, we will hold our
Rotary Foundation Dinner on May 4, 2012, which
we are calling the Night of

a thousand Paul Harris
Fellows, where on that
night we will recognize
1,000 new and multiple
Paul Harris Fellows in
one night. More information will be provided in
each monthly newsletter
and at the seminar in September.
We expect that 2012-13
will be an historic year for
The Rotary Foundation in
District 6980 with not
only record giving, but
also with record program
participation and support.
Best wishes for a most
outstanding Rotary year
ahead!
Randy Rawiszer PDG
District Rotary Foundation Committee Chairman
2011-13

Youth Exchange Update-John Siegel
We say Bon voyage to 14 students, all sponsored by our Rotary
Clubs, as they start their year as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student. They will be our Rotary ambassadors representing their
families, school, Rotary District 6980, and the USA in ten different country's world wide. Our students have attended three orientations and five training meetings to prepare them for the year
ahead. Rotarian Scott Korgmann of the Rotary Club of Collage
Park has the pleasure to oversee the training of our students.
Rotary Exchange Students

Our District has the pleasure of hosting 12 students (we call them inbounds) for the
school year ahead. They will be arriving in August. We still need host families to open
up their home to these students. If you are an empty nester and you are up to a life
changing experience, host one of these students. If you would like to host one of
our students and have the opportunity to bring a new culture into your home. They may
even cook you a meal from their local cuisine! Please contact John Siegel at

A Shelter Box Response Team (SRT) is traveling to
South Sudan on June 29 to discuss the distribution
of emergency shelter with other aid agencies, in response to continuing conflict in the African country.
Sudan split into two countries in July 2011 after the people
of the south voted for independence. However, there are still
unresolved issues between Sudan's Khartoum and South Sudan's Juba, including disputes over the border around Abyei; and contestation over oil-rich areas. Families have
become displaced from their homes.
People from the south who had been living further north due to displacement from
more than 50 years of civil war are now being forced to return to South Sudan and
leave what has been their home for decades. They have nowhere to go. Shelter Box is
responding to fill this void and working toward bringing the displaced families shelter
and dignity. To read more about this story, click HERE.

Rotary Club Locator App for Smart Phones
You can now search for a Rotary club with RI's free mobile app. In the Apple app store
and Android market, it's called the Rotary Club Locator from Rotary International. The
app also will soon be offered for BlackBerry phones. The "Near Me" search locates clubs
within a physical radius of 100 miles. (Note: Actual driving distances may be further.)
A keyword search for clubs. This search looks for the keyword in either the club name or
meeting location address. This is useful for finding clubs that are outside of the 100-mile
radius from your current location. A map showing a club's location and driving directions. The ability to save search results to a list of favorite clubs .The ability to add a club
to your phone's contact list. The club's website and primary phone number, if available.
A search function to find clubs by district. Click HERE to get app. Answer 1.Did you
know that a Club President can vote on a motion before the board according to the Rotary Club Constitution, as he is an officer of the club.

Sleep Disorder Basics....
Of the more than 80 types of sleep disorders, most can be
grouped into one of the three categories.
Disturbed sleep-- Any condition that causes restless, frequently interrupted or poor quality sleep. Examples include
sleep apnea and restless legs syndrome, both of which can
make staying asleep difficult.
Too much sleep-- Any condition that causes you to sleep more
than what is considered necessary or healthful. Narcolepsies,
Ed Yuiska
which causes excessive sleepiness and uncontrollable “sleep attack,” and depression, can create feelings of lethargy, both are both examples of such conditions.
Too little sleep-- Any condition that robs you of the optimal amount of sleep, insomnia, characterized by difficulty falling or staying asleep and other sleep difficulties, is an example of this
type of condition.
Disorders that either limit your sleep or disrupt it often lead to sleep deprivation. Wondering
whether you’re deprived? Consider how much time you need to fall asleep. It takes most people several minutes to drift into a deep slumber. If you fall asleep very quickly (ex: within the
first 5 minutes of lying down) it is a strong indication that you are sleep deprived.
All sleep disorders can be either primary or secondary. If it is the result of another underlying
physical or mental condition, it’s considered a secondary sleep disorder. EX: a person may suffer from insomnia with depression. Primary sleep disorders don’t stem from other conditions
but often can be secondary ones. EX: someone with restless legs syndrome may also develop insomnia because of one’s ability to sleep soundly. Fortunately, treating symptoms of the
primary sleep disorder will often improve symptoms of other disorders that may be present.

An Oasis in the Desert
Fellowship is the glue that holds Rotary Clubs together. Paul Harris knew this from Day 1. Some might consider it a
selfish reason to join for the friendships, but having friends is as important to one’s health as breathing. Harris rejoiced in the fellowship of Rotary, and he wanted every Rotarian to rejoice with him.
“In the social desert of a city, they possessed an oasis all their own. To it the chosen few came to revel in the delights
of friendly communion. No longer would any of them have occasion to dream in city parks and public places of happy days gone by; the ‘Happy days had come again.’”
(Paul Harris, This Rotarian Age, page 57)
Reprinted by permission of the Rotary Global History from the Newsletter Nuggets Section of “What Paul Harris
Wrote” (www.whatpaulharriswrote.org). Answer 3. Did you know that if a vacancy becomes open on the Club Board,
it’s the BOARD that fills the vacancy.
