challenging

Thailand 2012 brings young people from all over Herefordshire to take
part in a journey through Thailand’s diverse lands. The expedition will
involve living and working alongside families and communities in the
east of Thailand, close to the border of Cambodia. Project work will
include building and renovating children’s homes, schools or
orphanages in and around Surin, creating water pumps to provide clean
water and sustainable farming techniques for agriculture.

Safe. Young people need to be free to enjoy their youth, free from
risk-taking behaviour, free from spending money they don’t have, free
from abuse. At Close House drop-in centre and our off-site youth clubs,
we have pool tables, games consoles, arts and crafts, musical
instruments, outdoor games and internet access, and it’s all free.

Supportive. Projects are staffed by qualified and experienced youth
workers who provide informal support on anything from school and
family to drugs, relationships and healthy living.
Inspiring. The staff team and partners put on workshops, activities and
showcases that include a variety of exciting themes, including media,

Herefordshire Diamond Day, which is expected to attract thousands of
visitors, will celebrate all that is good and great about the county and will
reflect Herefordshire life during the past 60 years and blend it with a
taste of life in the 21st century and beyond.
As part of The Queen’s regional tour for the Diamond Jubilee, she will be
visiting Hereford on 11th July – it can now be revealed she will be
travelling through High Town and will spend some time at the Diamond
Day event.
During her time in the city, The Queen will visit the new Cathedral Close
and then enjoy the entertainment being laid on as part of Herefordshire
Diamond Day on the King George V playing fields.
“I’m delighted to be able to confirm that she will be able to join us for our
celebrations,” said Lady Darnley, the Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire.
“We’re going to give The Queen a real taste of life in Herefordshire and
I’m sure as many people as possible will join us in our Diamond Day
celebrations,” added Lady Darnley.
“The team behind the plans are all very excited and enthusiastic about
the event and I’m sure we’re in for a sparkling day of celebrations which
will be complemented perfectly by the visit of The Queen.”

The team will then move on to live with a Thai family and work in a
traditional Elephant village with local Mahouts (Elephant handlers)
who have worked with the Elephants for centuries. Here they will
learn about traditional Thai life, learn the language and learn to cook
Thai food, help create a sustainable food supply for the elephants,
learn Thai fishing techniques, kayak on the river and if the weather is
right, take the elephants to the river to cool down after a day of work.
The expedition is closely linked with the Duke of Edinburgh’s award
programme.

Thailand's Facts:
Area: 198,455 sq mi.
Capital City: Bangkok
Population: 60 million
Main Language: Thai
Currency: Baht
Bangkok currently holds the Guinness record for having the longest name of a place.
Apparently “Bangkok” is just the short version because the city’s ceremonial name is

“Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop
Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman
Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit”. - Say what?

“We are once again looking forward to opening up our doors to the
public so they can get a behind the scenes look at the sort of work we
all do every day to keep them safe.
“There will be lots of exciting things for all the family to see, but it is
also a great opportunity for us to meet the public and provide advice on
staying safe in all kinds of scenarios.
“It is important that children feel comfortable speaking to the
emergency services, and an event like this can be a great way for kids
to interact with our staff and have a good time.”
Entry to these fantastic events is free of charge and they are
expected to start at 11am.

The Shadow Board provides a voice for young people aged 11-18 yrs
(and up to 25 years with additional needs) on issues affecting young
people in the county. Over the last seven years members have been
involved in organising events and campaigns such as the School Council
Training Day and the Staying Safe @ Christmas drive which provided
4000 goodie bags full of information to pupils all over the County along
with interactive road shows in Schools and on the High Street. Members
of the board come from all types of secondary schools throughout the
county and come from a range of different backgrounds.
They follow the work of the Children and Young People’s Partnership
Forum. Members of
this forum are the
Council, Schools and
Colleges, the PCT,
the Police, the YOS,
Voluntary Services,
Job Centre and the
SB.

Fourteen young people got to grips with democracy
in Easter. Members of the Herefordshire Shadow
Board worked hard to raise funds for an educational
trip to London. Cake sales, bag packing in
supermarkets and sending letters to local organisations helped to raise

sponsorship for a guided tour round the Houses of Parliament which was
organised through Jesse Norman MP. Jesse was away from Westminster
the day of the trip but in a letter to the board he spoke of arranging a
meeting in Hereford in the near future. The Shadow Board together with
members of the United Kingdom Youth Parliament have chosen to lobby
their MP on the most important issues facing young people in the County.
These are unemployment and child poverty.

The elections for a
member of the Youth
Member of Parliament
for Herefordshire took
part on the 12th May.
During the day, MP for
South Herefordshire
Jesse Norman visited
so that the young
people could ask questions; he talked passionately about tuition fees for
University amongst other things. A manifesto was drawn up during the
day, with three main issues including transport, help and support for
young people and things to do in the county. Martha Fish was elected as
member of Youth Parliament and Rachael Murtagh was elected as
Deputy Member of Youth Parliament.

After Election Day, three of the young people who attended the Election
Day went to the 1st of 3 regional conventions in Birmingham run by UK
Youth Parliament. At the convention, listening skills were developed and a
number of talks took place, which were very engaging. The most
Interesting idea the young people took away from the convention was the
idea for a young people’s travel card similar to one which is currently issued in Staffordshire called the ‘Staffordshire Card’. This entitles people
from 11-19 to travel on buses within the county for just £1. The young people met again on the 16th June to talk about possible future developments,
and they are currently in the process of researching the possibility of introIf you are interested in getting involved or getting your voice heard, get in
