RYA-Accredited Beginner’s Tuition
The Student Winds urfing Association (SWA) has always
done its best to s upport newcome rs to the sport.
By joining UWE Windsurf & Kite, you will have access
to RYA trained Start Windsurfing Instructors, ensuring
you prog ress quickly, confidently and safely.
The club has access to land based simulators a nd a
range of beginner boards and sails, allowing us to cate r
for varying weathe r conditions and all levels of ability.
While learning to winds urf you will always be
supported during trips with on-wate r tuition-a ndfeedback and the peace of mind that safety boats are
on hand to rescue you should you get into difficulty.

Intermediate Encouragement
As an intermediate windsurfer, UWE Windsurf & Kite
will actively encourage your ongoing progression with
both inland lake trips and als o regula r coas tal trips to
Weymouth and Poole Harbour.
The club rece ntly invested in a num ber of intermediate
boards a nd now boasts a selection from 150l to 200l
displacement, allowing you to progress from beginne r
kit as soon as you are ready to do so.
The club will help to prepare you to achieve your
Intermediate Planing / Non-Planing Certifica te. Our
network of indus try contacts also mea ns tha t we can
get you access to RYA Ce rtification at a me re fraction
of the norma l cos t.

Advanced Windsurfing
The student windsurfing are na is one of the m ost
vibrant and exiting places for advanced winds urfe rs to
sail and com pete. Whethe r you have your own
personal kit, or will be looking to use club equipment:
UWE Windsurf & Kite is the club for you!
While club membe rs will regularly organise social trips
to the lake and coast, a whole diffe rent world awaits
you when you enter the arena of SWA Events.
Whether you fancy Slalom, F reestyle or Wave, there is
a competition for you; and let’s not forget that with

Social Creatures….
When you Join UWE W indsurf & Kite, you’ll not only be joining the Best
Club at UWE (as voted at the UWESU Sports Awards 2011/12). You’ll
also be entering into one of the most vibrant socia l scenes that Bris tol
has to offe r.
Our regular weekly socials a re he ld on a Tuesday evening and start at
around 8pm. We’ll normally start the night a t a bar venue, where
drinking games, boat races and general hila rity will ensue! F rom he re we
will begin a slow crawl toward our mid-evening watering hole of choice
where our kind spons ors will supply us with some free drinks!...Then it’s
time to m ove on to a club and let the dance floor work its magic. Each
year we have a number of bar-sponsors which means cheap entry,
queue jumping and epic drinks deals!
We regularly meet our University of Bristol counterpa rts as the two
windsurf clubs (often referred to as BrUWE) have built an amazing
relationship over the las t few years. This means our socials can
sometimes attract anywhere up to 100 people who are all out together
for the same reason to party!

Holidays
Every year UWE Windsurf & Kite offe rs its
members the opportunity to go windsurfing or
kitesurfing in a resort location at substantially
discounted prices.
In recent years the club has been to Morocco,
Egypt and Greece. The re are currently plans for a
holiday in the Cana ry Islands during the 2012/13
academic year.
But the fun doesn’t stop the re! 2012 saw a group
of like-minded winds urfe rs get togethe r on the
Jubilee weekend at Rhosne igr, Anglesey, for an
independent event now dubbed Rhossy Kiss.

Aussie Kiss Festival
Every year, the Student Windsurf calendar kicks off in a big way with Aussie Kiss. The SWA
takes over Bude Holiday Park where as many as 800 students gather for an unforgettable
weekend of partying, fancy dress….and (if the hangover permits) a little windsurfing!
With a unique festival atmosphere, the party moves from Bude to Roadford Lake by day, where
demo kit, clinics, tuition and competition awaits.
On the Saturday night, it’s time to party...SWA Style. Fancy dress is mandatory, and UWE never
fails to make an impression! Whatever you do, you won’t want to miss this truly awesome

The SWA Series - A Tale of Two Halves
Throughout the year, universities a round the UK play hos t to the SWA Core and Wave series events. Core events
(Sponsored by Boardwise) are held inland and feature racing for all ability levels, while s till providing tuition and
support for newcome rs to the sport. The SWA Wave series (Sponsore d by Puravida) takes place at various locations
around the British coastline allowing both novice and e xperienced wave-ride rs to compe te.
But let’s not forget….wherever the SWA go, a party always follows! Your student winds urf counterpa rts will put you
up in their homes, keeping costs down to ensure you have ple nty of m oney for ‘refreshme nts’!
The SWA series continues throughout the year, so the m ore events you go to, the bette r your chances! Thousands
of pounds-worth of prizes a re given away at the e nd of the academic year for the top performers; ranging from
windsurf appare l right the way through to sails, rigs and brand new custom built windsurf boards ! This race se ries

It’s the Big One….It’s BrUWE Wet Dreams!
For three years running, UWE (teamed up with University of Bristol Winds urf Club) has
fought off competition from othe r potentia l host universities to hold the annua l BrUWE
Wet Dreams SWA core se ries event. UWE has proven itself
to be one of the biggest
pe rsonalities when it comes to
partying at the SWA event series, and at the BrUWE event,
we step it up to the next level! Up to 200 winds urfe rs descend on Bris tol for one of the biggest entries in the SWA
calendar!
Friday night sees old friends re unite and new friends hips form during the s tandard
SWA Friday night catch up! Friday is never the main night of the event but it more
often than not be comes the heaviest of the two!
On Saturday night, in keeping with true SWA style, a fa ncy dress affair of epic proportions takes place! Every year, without fail, BrUWE proves to the s tudent windsurf
world that Bristol is the city to host the best SWA Party of the core series!

During the day (on both Saturday and Sunday), the whole event pa rty moves to our very own Bowmoor Sailing
Club. Once on location, gazebos are erecte d, music starts pumping and the party continues with everything from
tuition covering all levels of ability to compe tition suiting all s tandards of e xperience!
Demo kit will be on hand for all those who want to try some thing new, whethe r you are looking to buy or just see
what all the hype is all about! Each univers ity will bring kit too, meaning that this is the day when we are able to
get record numbers of windsurfers on the wate r at Bowm oor.
At the end of the day on Sunday, after the annual BrUWE jelly wrestling com petition (which culminates in the tradition of Bristol and UWE’s presidents wrestling for the honour of their club); a prize giving will take place naming
the weekends top performers.

BUCS Windsurf
National
Championships
(Southampton)
The end of the SWA calenda r is marked by the BUCS Windsurf Na tiona l
Champions hips, held at Calshot Activities Centre near Southampton. This is the
one and only event whe re SWA members have the opportunity to com pete for
a prestigious BUCS medal! Everyone who atte nds the National Championships
has the opportunity to compete against othe rs of the ir ability. So whethe r you
are beginner, intermediate, advanced or in the team race; there’s an
opportunity for you to get on that podium and bring home a BUCS medal!
In addition to the compe tition, this event is als o an opportunity for the SWA to
get together for one last blowout before e xams begin and everyone disappea rs
for the summe r….which means only one thing…..anothe r party of epic
standards! On the Saturday night everyone attending dons the ir fancy dress
outfit and leaves the jetty for the Nationals Boat Party….that’s right A BOAT
PARTY! Aboard ship, touring the Solent, the boat party gets the night s tarte d
before returning to s hore around 11pm for the Hangar Rave!
UWE never fails to bring back medals from the BUCS Nationals Cham pions hips.
In 2011 UWE had its most successful year to date, dominating the com petition
with me dals in every class and division.
The Nationals weekend never fails to impress….
….and is definitely not one to be m issed!

Two Amazing Sports...One Amazing Club!
In 2011, UWE Windsurf was proud to help support the launch UWE Kites urf. As the sports are very closely
related, and to ensure the continued success of both, UWE Winds urf and UWE Kitesurf have joined forces for
2012/13 and have now become UWE Windsurf & Kite Club!
With Kitesurfing being added to the Olympic line-up for 2016 it is a very exciting time for the sport. And with so
many people showing interes t over the past year, UWE Windsurf & Kite is looking forward to introducing yet
more people to this fast-paced and exciting s port.
The club will offer land based instruction us ing traction kites at Clifton Downs, as well as trips to Weston Supe rMare ensuring newcomers to the sport receive all the help and support necessary to maste r the basics of kite
control before taking to the wate r. For those members who are more advanced and already sailing, trips to
Poole Ha rbour and Weymouth will be organised whenever conditions are suitable.
The SKA (Student Kitesurfing Association) regularly attends events around the UK whe re com petitions take
place in a variety of disciplines with clinics available to all those who atte nd. UWE Windsurf & Kite will be
attending a numbe r of SKA events throughout the stude nt kitesurfing calendar, showing other membe rs of the
SKA just how well UWE knows how to bring the compe tition (and the party) to a ny event!

Most Improved Club of the Year - UWESU Sports Awards 2011
In the summer of 2011, UWE Windsurf Club a chieved its fi rs t awa rds in recent yea rs being voted
Most Improved Club of the Year by UWESU a t the annual Sports Awa rds. The awa rd recognised
dra ma tic i mprovements in the wa y the club was run, numbers of members , social invol vement and
BUCS Nationals Cha mpionships performance.
But the club didn’t s top there! Increasing the clubs presence a round the UWE campus ’s allowed
UWE Windsurf to a ttra ct record numbers of members in September 2011. Regular socials, regula r
trips (both beginner and intermedia te), a constant s tri ve to improve the club (incl uding a number
of members undertaking RYA ins tructor courses) and yet more medals a t the BUCS Na tionals
Cha mpionships saw the Club a chieve the mos t presti gious awa rd possible. In the summer of 2012
UWE Windsurf was voted Best Club of the Year a cknowledging another yea r of ha rd work by a
fa ntasti c club supported by a dedica ted committee.
Wi th Windsurf and Ki te combining this yea r, the club has a great opportuni ty to go from strength
