YARN - Medium #4 (worsted weight).
NEEDLES – Crown US size #6 (4mm): set of 5
double pointed. I-Cord (dpn); Body, Band and Brim

( cir) – US size #5 (3.75mm); 16” (40cm) cir and set
of 2 double-pointed (dpn). Brim – US size #4

(3.5mm): 16” (40cm) circular (cir). I-cord BO – US
size #3 (3.25mm): set of 2 double-pointed (dpn).
Adjust needles if needed for gauge.

GAUGE: 20 stitches and 36 rnds = 4” (10 cm) in
garter st with medium needles; 19 sts and 48 rnds
= 4” (10 cm) in slipped st patt (as worked for band)
with medium needles.
NOTIONS: Marker (m); tapestry needle; machinewashable waste yarn (optional); wire cutters; firm
jewelery wire.
FINISHED SIZE: 20½” (52cm) circumference at
band; to fit 20-23” (51-58.5cm) head
circumference.

❉ TOP I-CORD: With middle size set of 2 dpns, CO 4 sts.
Work I-cord for 1½” (4.cm). Change to largest size set of 4 dpns.
❉ SHAPE CROWN:
Rnd 1: (inc rnd) *K1, yo; rep from * to
end – 8 sts. Distribute sts evenly over 4
dpns. Join for working in the rnd
without twisting sts.
Rnd 2: *K1, k1 through back loop (tbl);
rep from * to end.
Rnd 3: (inc rnd) *K1f&b; rep from * to
end – 16 sts.
Rnd 4: Knit.
Rnd 5: (set-up rnd) *K1, place marker (pm), RLI (right lifted increase) rep from *
to end – 24 sts.
Rnd 6: Knit.
Rnd 7: (inc rnd) K to st before m, RLI, sl m; rep from * to end – 8 sts increased.
Rnd 8: Knit.
❉ Repeat rnds 7&8 nine times – 104 sts.
❉ BODY: Change to larger cir needle.
Rnd 1: Purl.
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rep rnds 1&2 fourteen more times, decreasing 1 st at end of last rnd – 103 sts.
Piece measures about 3½” (9cm) from last inc rnd.
❉ BAND:
Rnd 1: Sl 1 purlwise (pwise) with yarn in front (wyf),
*k1, sl1 pwise wyf; rep from * to end..
Rnd 2: K1, *sl1 pwisse wyf, k1; rep from * to end. Rep rnds 1&2 six more times,
then work rnd 1 once more; band measures about 1¼” (3cm).

❉ BRIM:
Rnd 1: Purl. Change to smaller cir needle.
Rnd 2: (inc rnd) K1, *yo, k6; rep from * to end – 120 sts.
Rnd 3: Purl, working yo from prev rnd tbl.
Rnd 4: Knit.
Rnd 5: Purl. Change to larger cir needle.
Rnd 6&7: Rep rnds 4&5.
Rnd 8: (inc rnd) K1, *yo, k7; rep from * to end – 137 sts.
Rnd 9: Rep rnd 3.

❉ FINISHING: Slip sts onto waste yarn and block hat to measurements. Return held
sts to larger cir and BO using the attached i-cord with wire
(see illustration). .
