Saving Mountain Landscapes Forever

SPRING 2012-INCLUDING ANNUAL REPORT 2011

VOLUME 14, NO. 1

Wild About Colorado set for July 19-21, 2012
Are you Wild About Colorado? We are!
Our annual art and outdoor event showcases all that we love
about Colorado: wild lands, wildlife, wildflowers, history and
recreation. The new name also highlights the broader scope
for the event, allowing the invited artists to choose their
subjects and the places they paint. Wild About Colorado
offers expanded wildflower walks, history and ghost site
tours, painting workshops for any level, a photography
workshop, how to make botanical lotions, Wet Paint Show,
People’s Choice voting and more.
Don’t miss the Art Show, Sale and Party on the evening of
Friday, July 20. Everything takes place at the Carter Park
Pavilion in Breckenridge.
Check out the official event website at
www.WildAboutColorado.org and for more information,
see page 3.

Please Support CDLT with your Annual Donation
There is no question that fundraising continues to
be a significant challenge for non-profits, and
CDLT is no exception. Our revenues were down
considerably in 2011.
But 2012 is looking up with
the best ever Phantom Ranch
Ball, a new conservation
easement in the works, and
exciting new events. Please
help us turn things around in
2012 with your annual
contribution to CDLT by using
the return envelope enclosed
with this newsletter.

to do our work, benefits of supporting CDLT, and
upcoming projects. Please support CDLT today!
Thank you!

Iron Springs targeted by CDOT

extinguishment of the conservation easement on the Iron Springs

Phantom Ranch Ball Update

Iron Springs, continued
The proposed new alignment of Highway 9 would cut about a
half mile of roadway, avoid major retaining walls along Dillon
Reservoir, may spare a fen wetland found on the Iron Springs
and adjacent Denver Water Board property, and may allow
for enhancements to wetlands. Rec path users may benefit by
avoiding the hill and sharp turn at Iron Springs and could see
a meandering path along the shores of the reservoir instead.
These enhancements come with a steep cost, including
wildlife underpasses and bridges to avoid the fen and to allow
for rec path crossings. CDOT is currently exploring the costs
of the various highway options, as well as figuring in the long
-term maintenance for a shorter highway route.
Iron Springs is a 30 acre parcel adjacent to Summit High
School and Dillon Reservoir. It was purchased in 2003 by
Summit County Open Space with funding from Great
Outdoors Colorado and other partners. CDLT holds the
conservation easement which protects scenic views, wildlife
habitat, recreation, and an historic mining site.
While it appears that there may be overall benefits to the
environment and the traveling public, the new proposed route
impacts critical winter elk habitat in the Iron Springs area,
significantly changes the recreation experience, and may
result in the extinguishment of the Iron Springs conservation
easement.
CDOT held a public open house on Wednesday, June 13
regarding Iron Springs and the Silverthorne interchange.

Check out our Facebook page for
the latest updates, news and photos
from CDLT. Our Facebook fans
were the first to hear the date for
the Open Space Celebration with John Fielder, and they’ve
enjoyed photos of our outings, wildflower sightings, and open
space news. We’ll continue to update on Facebook with the
latest news about the Wild About Colorado event and other
upcoming events and volunteer opportunities. You don’t have
to be on Facebook to see our page, it’s public! Visit

Did you enjoy an
evening at home
on April 1st for
the Phantom
Ranch Ball?
Thank you for
staying home in
support of
CDLT’s
“phantom” event!
The 5th Annual Phantom Ranch Ball was our best yet,
raising over $6,000 for CDLT’s land conservation
efforts. Congratulations to Jon Kirkpatrick, winner of
the original watercolor painting by Ann T. Weaver of
the imaginary “Phantom Ranch 2012.”

GOCO survives
legislative session
Colorado’s legislators made two attempts to divert
funding from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) in the
recently closed 2012 Colorado legislative session.
Thankfully, both attempts failed and the important
work of GOCO can continue to provide funding for
wildlife habitat, open space, parks, recreation and
trails through Lottery proceeds. Help us celebrate 20
years of GOCO with John Fielder at our Open Space
Celebration coming November 20 to the Silverthorne
Pavilion. See page 8 for more information.

Park County Outreach
“One of the best presentations on conservation
easements I’ve ever heard,” was the statement from
one of the attendees at our presentation in Alma on
March 30 on Land Conservation Options for the
Mosquito Range. About 30 people came to learn
about conservation easements and other land
protection methods, tax benefits, trail and fishing
easements, and other topics relevant to the Mosquito
Range. If you would like a copy of the hand-out from
the event, please contact us.

Colorado River Cooperative Agreement Signed
In last spring’s newsletter, we reported on the historic
Colorado River Cooperative Agreement under negotiation
to end years of fighting and litigation between Denver
Water and west slope interests, including Summit County.
Key aspect of the agreement include limits on Denver
Water’s service area, protection of river flows along the
Colorado River, contribution of millions of dollars toward
environmental enhancements and water treatment,

provision of water to Summit County, and best efforts
toward maintaining Dillon Reservoir at optimum levels for
marinas and recreation, among other promises. Additional
benefits include collaboration and communication, best
management practices, and conservation of water
resources. The 34 parties to the negotiated agreement
announced the signing of the document in May 2012. For
more information, visit www.crwcd.org.

It’s hard to believe that another year has passed and that the
landscape of challenges and opportunities for CDLT has changed
so much in just one year.
On the challenges side, 2011 was a very difficult year financially
as donations and grants were less than we had anticipated but
expenses, most of which are fixed, were hard to reduce. In
addition, 2 of our long-time conservation easements have come
under potential attack from governmental units that now see
prospective new uses for the underlying properties.
On the opportunities side, we have been approached (for the first
time in a few years) to consider a new conservation easement on
a beautiful piece of property, and we are working with the
County and County Commissioners to place easements on several
of the County’s open space properties. In addition (as you will
see in another part of this letter), we have added 3 new Board
members who bring a wealth of talent and energy to our Board
and the ability to give their new perspectives.
While somewhat restricted due to limited financial resources,
CDLT had a very productive year in 2011 including successful
renewal of our certification from the State of Colorado to hold
conservation easements; water related education involving
professional education credits on “Keeping Water Local” and a
public presentation by Peter McBride on the Colorado River;
continued cooperation with Park County to assist their residents
in understanding and working with conservation easements and
open space programs; and the successful relocation of our Art &
Wildflower Celebration (now, Wild About Colorado) to
Breckenridge, which expanded the number of attendees and
increased revenues.
And, as covered in other parts of this letter, we have a busy year
planned with our newly named Wild about Colorado wildflower
event in July, a John Fielder event in the fall, a History of
Ranching in the Lower Blue presentation by Mary Ellen Gilliland,
and the Pulling for Colorado Weed Pull. We are looking forward
to these events and hope that you will volunteer to help with the
events and, along with your friends and family, attend and
support them.
We welcome your interest and support and hope you will let us
know your thoughts about preserving open space in our beautiful
county and surrounding counties and that you will spread the
word about who and what CDLT is. We look forward to seeing
you at our upcoming events and to renewing old friendships and
building new ones. Be well and enjoy the summer here in God’s
Country.
