Searching For
A New Balance

Message from the Managing Director
As the year draws to a close we look back at what has been a very eventful and busy
year, not only at Teraoka but for the country as a whole. We have witnessed the highs
of Olympic Gold medals and unbeaten Test Cricket Teams contrasting with the lows of
the Marikana Mining tragedy and the violent Truck Driver Strike. However, as citizens of
this country and employees of this company we must continue to celebrate our
successes and morn our losses and address them where possible. We must never allow
the lows to cancel out the highs!
As a company we ended the financial year fractionally ahead of last year. We have
begun the year well and to date we are nicely ahead of the same period (Sept - Nov)
compared with last year. Keep up the good work!
I’m proud to announce that in addition to all the good business that was achieved
during the course of the year, there were 2 milestones we had been stumbling over
since I can remember. The first was BEE and the second a decent Web Page. I am
pleased to say that in October of this year we achieved our first Bee Certificate and
during the earlier part of December we finally unveiled our new web page. Well done
to all involved - please visit us at www.teraoka.co.za, and look out for our Facebook
page coming soon!
So all that’s left for me to say is to wish you all…
A blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year!
I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year, well rested and ready to continue in
our winning ways!

F

Yours Sincerely,
Paul.

Other news… (continued)
New verification procedure
The SANS1649 and SANS10378 Standards have recently been revised
in order to include the latest international OIML legislation. In order to
ensure that Teraoka’s quality system addresses the new requirements
of SANS10378, our entire quality system has been re-written. There are
luckily no major changes to the actual system as such, and much of
the administration procedures and forms remain the same, however
the verification procedure, SANS1649, has changed substantially. The
new system and verification procedure (Proc) is being finalized and
will be posted to all branches during December, after which each
lab’s approving and implementation officers will be required to
perform their January / February internal audits on the new system.
Full documented training should also be given simultaneously to all
staff involved with verification. The new verification procedure has to
be followed from January, as not only will any verification done
according to the old procedure be null and void, but candidates will
also fail in their VO exam attempts if they do not use the new
procedure. The new system will be sent with detailed guidelines for
implementation - Please do not hesitate to contact Jacques Scholtz
should you have any questions in this regard.

EMPLOYEE NEWSLETTER
Below: We invited Mr. Wynand Millard & Mr. Sico Olivier, both well
known names in the industry, over to go through the new verification
procedure and requirements with us. This took place over two
laborious sessions, but needless to say, this will once again put us a
step ahead and on top of things from the get-go!

Operation Rooivalk now declassified – Durban infiltration mission
Our Durban branch has been going down a slope for some time…
until Korporaal van Wyk decided ‘NO MORE’. A plan of action was
established, troops were tallied, transport scrambled, and an ops-unit of
about 17 head office staff were deployed, heading down to Durban
early on a cold mid-July Sunday morning. Their highly classified mission:
to infiltrate and correct the situation with determination and precision.
Customers were visited, machines
were sold, deliveries were cought up,
an open day was held, offices were
fixed up and painted. Techs were
trained, and quality audited. Braais
were held. People were shouted at
and then hugged. After a week, and
an acceptable inventory of
corrections, the camp was packed
up and ops-unit disbanded…
until we set our sights on the next
branch… beware.

Systems training
In June a systems training course was held for all systems techs,
focusing on Intermec, Software, and DI760
* If the December bonus does not meet your expectations, please
revert to these attendees as a substantial amount of equipment
had to be written off following this course.

94.7 cycle challenge

Smart Camp

Jim Pinder took part in the 94.7 cycle challenge for
“THE PAIGE PROJECT”. This organization was started
3 years ago and supports cerebral palsy. It was
started by the Barson family, due to Jim’s riding
companion’s daughter having cerebral palsy from
birth. Over R220 000-00 was raised with 225 riders
taking part for the cause. Me, on the other hand
had my fair share of challenges on this ride. Jim
finished in 4h51mins, and would like to share a
quote: “It’s the small things we give in life that have
the biggest impact in people’s lives. The challenge
I put to Teraoka Management and staff, is that for
next year’s 94.7 cycle challenge, we have at least
10 riders taking part”

Again this year Teraoka sponsored the annual “Smart Camp”.
For those that don’t know, Smart Camp is a week-long camp for ±50 kids aged
12 – 16, who come from disadvantages and abusive homes in various
communities from around Gauteng. These kids have been selected as “High Risk”
by their local community social workers. My wife and I were privileged enough to
join the group for dinner one evening where we got to know some of the kids a
little better and also chat to the counsellors to further understand the daily
challenges that these kids face. I was surprised by the positive energy that all the
kids displayed and there enthusiasm given there circumstances was humbling!
Well done to all the counsellors and to Teraoka for our contribution to this cause.

BEE - Teraoka is now a proud BEE level 7 company!

NSPCA
Please support your local SPCA. At this time of the year, resources
are stretched to the limit and the workload increases. Donations
of food, items for sale as well as financial support, are always
welcomed and are vital to the survival of every individual SPCA.

Santa shoebox project
The Santa Shoebox Project is an inspiring community
initiative that co-ordinates the donation, collection and
distribution of personalized gifts at Christmas time to
underprivileged children across South Africa and Namibia.
99,470 shoeboxes were donated in 2012! With the help of
their friends, the Scholtz’s were able to donate 20 boxes:

Christmas recipes
Drinks:
Christmas Cookie – With such a name, this cocktail sounds innocent enough. But be forewarned:
it really packs a wallop with three ounces of alcohol. It tastes a little like a peppermint latte, only
much better, and makes a delicious dessert drink. Feel free to try other brands of coffee liqueur
and Irish cream – Tia Maria is a great alternative.
- 1 part peppermint schnapps
- 1 part Kahlua
- 1 part Bailey’s
Combine the ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake thoroughly, strain into a chilled martini glass.
The Chocolate Peppermint Stick - tastes exactly like you’d expect from the name. The main flavor
is overwhelmingly peppermint. If you’ve ever had one of those peppermint sticks that has a
chocolatey ribbon woven through it instead of the usual red fruity ones, that’s about what this
drink tastes like. It’s wonderful for a night in.
- 1/2 part white creme de cacao
- 1 part cream
- 1 part peppermint schnapps
Skake well with ice. Strain ingredients into chilled martini glasses. Garnish with a small peppermint
candy cane (or, optionally, crush the candy cane and sprinkle it on top) and serve.
Snacks:
Vodka Bears
When you soak gummy bears in vodka, they absorb the alcohol and turn into a yummy fruity treat
with a kick.
You’ll need:
Vodka
Gummy bears or worms
A glass container (a glass with plastic wrap over it will do – rumor has it plastic does bad things to
vodka, so be sure there’s no plastic actually touching the vodka).
Put the bears/worms into the glass dishes, and pour in
Vodka until it reaches the top of the candy. Using that
much vodka makes the candy swell and take on a
noticeable but not unpleasant “burning” alcohol sensation. If you don’t want the alcohol that strong, use
less vodka. The amount of time you let the bears soak
has no impact on how alcoholic they are. They will
suck up nearly every drop of vodka you put in, so the
trick is to use the right amount for your taste. You can
always add more if you taste them after a day or so
and think they’re not alcoholic enough.
Have fun...

We hope you enjoyed this edition!
Please remember to document all
interesting happenings at your branch.
Merry Christmas, and happy New Year!
Enjoy the holidays, and please drive safe
Ed.
