20 June 2013
Regions of ASA
We have seen a letter from Mr Evans (attached) which advises you to attend a
General Meeting of ASA in which he lists five motions to be discussed. We would like
to bring to your attention that Mr James Evans is presently suspended from his
position as the President of ASA, that he was impeached by 33 votes for with 1
against and 4 abstentions at a meeting dated 9 March 2013. Mr Evans has also gone
to court against the 7 members of the ASA Board that he suspended, which case was
dismissed with costs levelled against him. Thereafter he has gone to sort leave to
appeal on this decision. His lame claim that the IAAF recognises him as the president
even though he is suspended is indeed false and he continues to mislead the
Athletics membership and the public at large that he has the support of the IAAF and
that indeed he speaks on their behalf. The IAAF has categorically denied that Mr
Evans speaks on their behalf as he has no mandate from the IAAF to do so.
Please be advised that while the suspended leadership of ASA and some provinces
has written to IAAF directly seeking the intervention of the IAAF Mr Evans is trying
to short-circuit this process in an attempt to call this General Meeting which
decisions cannot be valid.
He has further threatened staff members with a letter written to them (attached) 19
June 2013, which is typically Mr Evans style of trying to frighten individuals and
make them feel insecure. He asks them not to take instructions from anyone else but
Board members which is very strange considering that 7 of the Board Members
were suspended by the President himself.
Nevertheless let me advise you that it would be an error on the part of regions and
staff members to adhere to any instruction or attend any meeting called by Mr
James Evans who is currently suspended by SASCOC. It would be prudent to note
that while ASA is a member of the IAAF ASA gets its recognition as a National
Federation of Athletics in our country South Africa only by virtue of its membership
of the South African Sports Confederation & Olympic Committee. So take note that
Mr Evans can continue to hide behind the banner of the IAAF, any Athletics
Federation that is constituted must be a member of SASCOC in order to get
international recognition. We therefore advise you to await the response of the IAAF
in the short term and that Mr Majavu will conclude his findings in the short term
and make recommendations to the SASCOC board for implementation and action.
