Annual Report 2012

Responding to Change

Dear friend of

St. Anthony’s,
St. Anthony’s is a venerable institution; we’ve been at work for decades. Yet, since I joined the
Board of Directors six years ago, I’ve seen how quickly this organization responds to change.
Our staff rises to challenges that are sometimes hard to bear. This year, they responded to
an alarming rise in the number of families seeking help, corresponding with a rise in homeless families in California. More seniors, too, are coming to St. Anthony’s for food, housing,
benefits, and counseling.
Your consistent support has allowed St. Anthony’s programs the freedom to keep adapting
so that we can respond to change. Your contributions fund some of the most resourceful
service providers in San Francisco.
In 2012, St. Anthony’s Dining Room moved into temporary space to make way for the new
Dining Room without missing a single day of service. St. Anthony’s Social Work Center
found innovative ways to serve more guests with the staff and time that are available. The
Free Clothing Program began reaching out to affordable family housing sites to ensure
that more low-income families receive the clothing they need. The Dining Room and the
Free Clothing Program organized a back-to-school shopping day for families to get school
clothes and backpacks full of school supplies for their children.
This year, the original St. Anthony’s Dining Room was demolished to prepare for more big
changes. In its place, we will construct a larger, better designed building that will serve
more low-income people, more efficiently. Our partner, Mercy Housing California, will
build 90 units of affordable senior housing on the floors above.
St. Anthony’s is always responding to change, anticipating change, and working to create
change. Your support is a vote of confidence in our ability to build a better future.
Sincerely,

Suzanne B. Swift, President
Board of Directors
St. Anthony Foundation

JERRY LOL LOCK

Jerry’s giving connects
him with our guests.
Jerry Lollock knew that when he retired from the United
States Postal Service, he wanted to volunteer. He believed that
volunteering would be important during this transitional time
in his life to maintain a routine and connect with others. He’d
first heard about St. Anthony’s from a friend nearly 25 years ago.
Jerry became a weekly volunteer at St. Anthony’s. His volunteer
orientation was held on Valentine’s Day.
Jerry says entering the Dining Room transformed his life.
“Being in the Dining Room reminds me of what the larger world
should look like. St. Anthony’s Dining Room is a place where
anyone can come and be treated with respect and dignity.”
After seeing how people’s lives are changed at St. Anthony’s,
Jerry signed up to make a monthly gift and have a greater
impact. His contributions to St. Anthony’s really add up,
supporting programs that provide a gateway for our guests
to a better life.

JERRY’S GIFT TOUCHES SO MANY LIVES.
St. Anthony’s Dining Room
“They treat everybody well, no matter what.” — Marilyn Chan
To seniors like Marilyn who eat in the Dining Room, St. Anthony’s is
much more than a free meal program. It means community, friendly
conversation, and connection to other St. Anthony’s programs.
St. Anthony’s is serving 5% more seniors in the Dining Room than we did a year ago.
In the past year, the Dining Room served as many as 3,000 meals a day; 334 guests
became social work clients at meal time.

JERRY’S MONTHLY CONTRIBUTION IS ENOUGH TO PREPARE AND SERVE 400 MEALS FOR
LOW-INCOME AND HOMELESS PEOPLE.

Free Clothing Program
“You can’t go for a job interview if you’re not dressed for it. Clothing
facilitates a way back into the mainstream.” — Lawrence Zenk
When Lawrence was homeless, a suit of clothing from St. Anthony’s
Free Clothing Program was his first step back to self-esteem.
The Free Clothing Program helps men, women, and families stay warm and dress for
school and job interviews. During 2012, the Program provided 13,376 sets of clothing to
7,273 people.

JERRY’S GIFT WOULD COVER MORE THAN 10 SETS OF FREE CLOTHING.

The Father Alfred Center
“It’s been a blessing, collecting myself and getting back on track.”
— Sammuel Jimerson
Sammuel was a resident of the Father Alfred Center, St. Anthony’s
year-long residential recovery program. By the time they graduate,
residents like Sammuel have received counseling and peer support,
work experience and job skills training. They have been mentored and
served as mentors.
This year, the Father Alfred Center helped 170 men through the recovery process.

WITH ANOTHER DONOR LIKE JERRY, ST. ANTHONY’S COULD GUIDE 5 FATHER ALFRED
CENTER RESIDENTS THROUGH A JOB SEARCH.

The Tenderloin Technology Lab
“Whoever is sponsoring this facility, I give thanks to you.” — Shannon
Shannon traveled from Zimbabwe to San Francisco, a city he had
seen only on television, in search of employment. Without the
Tenderloin Technology Lab’s computer and resume building classes,
Shannon believes he’d have fallen through the safety net.
The Tenderloin Technology Lab, a partnership with San Francisco Network Ministries,
provided computer classes and drop-in time to 1,780 guests in over 30,000 visits last year.

JERRY’S GIFT WOULD PAY FOR 8 SESSIONS OF THE “INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS” CLASS.

St. Anthony Medical Clinic
“St. Anthony’s feels like home, and the doctors, nurses, and front office
staff all feel like family.” — Antonio
Before coming to St. Anthony’s, Antonio had been living with
undiagnosed diabetes. Clinic staff identified the problem and started
treatment from his very first visit. Now he sees the Diabetes Care
Coordinator regularly.
About 3,120 patients received 12,000 visits at St. Anthony Medical Clinic, including
individual coaching and support activities like a walking group, to address chronic disease
and overall health.

JERRY’S ANNUAL GIVING COULD PROVIDE AN ADULT WITH A DOCTOR’S CARE AT
ST. ANTHONY MEDICAL CLINIC ALL YEAR LONG.

Social ACTion Program
“The Dining Room is so well organized, making it easy for a new
volunteer to feel welcome and helpful.” — Elena Anaya
Elena has been a Dining Room volunteer for 23 years. She liked it so
much that she organized her coworkers at Turner Construction to
volunteer together every quarter. “My colleagues were very impressed
with the atmosphere, detailed organization and compassion shown
to the guests.”
St. Anthony’s Social ACTion Program introduces 10,000 volunteers to low-income people
and provides workshops that address the causes of poverty.

VOLUNTEERS LIKE JERRY AND ELENA DONATE OVER $1 MILLION IN LABOR TO ST. ANTHONY’S
PROGRAMS EVERY YEAR.

St. Anthony’s Social Work Center
“St. Anthony’s is a family of resources. I came in looking for one item,
and I ended up getting a whole bunch of others.” — Carlos Gomez
Carlos was introduced to the Social Work Center by Dining Room
staff when he asked for a laundry voucher. His St. Anthony’s social
worker found him home-based health care through an agency that
specializes in home-based services. Carlos still meets with his
social worker every week.
St. Anthony’s Social Work Center assisted 1,844 guests this year with benefits enrollment,
housing searches, income management, and counseling in 5,629 sessions.

JERRY’S GIFT EQUALED MORE THAN 40 SESSIONS WITH A SOCIAL WORKER.

Making Change
Jerry Lollock gives because there are a lot of people in need. Through paying a kind compliment to a guest or by giving a modest
amount every month he helps change lives.
“Volunteering and donating to St. Anthony’s has become a love. I have developed deep and meaningful relationships with others here at St. Anthony’s.”

“Great food served with a large side of love. I like the food, the love, and the
feeling I take with me when I leave. I am not junk and I am not alone.”
