Meet Ella Oliveira and her husband, Ken, owners of The Fancy
Flea Antique Mall in Shallotte, since 2007 and River News
sponsors since 2010. Here is their story.
We have not always been shop owners, far from it. So very tired
of the snow and cold weather, we retired from upstate New
York 10 years ago. I from nursing and Ken from the automotive
industry. We chose the Shallotte area due to my cousin owning a home on Shallotte Point. We vacationed here a couple of
times and we were sold on the area.
For a time I worked at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
While there, two nurse friends started taking me to auctions,
and I was really bit by the “bug.” I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and the opportunity to rent a small house on Main
Street happened. The Fancy Flea opened its doors! Going to
work became fun. Imagine that! Immediately I began to get
inquiries on renting consignment space. The shop was full and
a wait list soon started. So my next step was to expand and go
larger. And that happened when God got in the middle of it.
The Widow’s Mite is a well known Christian organization here
in Shallotte. I support their cause and donated to their auctions and fundraisers through the years. In October 2007 I was
on my way to Highest Praise Church to donate items for an
upcoming fundraiser. And there it was – “For Rent” in front of
the old Wicker & More building. Within a week, I had rented
the space and plans went into effect to move from Main Street.
I called my wait list and very soon the consignment spaces were
full. The Fancy Flea Antique Mall was born.
The business grew fast and was setting roots in the community. In 2008 we offered consignment for clients as well as Ebay
account management. By 2009 we were bursting at the seams
and I had a long wait list for rental space. Well, divine intervention happened again. With Wicker & More closing the business,
their space was available and another move was inevitable.

With the recession in full swing, I
remember praying about it. I still needed
20 new dealers within two weeks to fill
the larger store. I put an ad in the paper
and I received 22 new dealers which
facilitated the move to the larger building
in May 2009. Praise be!
The move to the larger facility gave us the
ability to do auctions in the back section.
After a year and a half my auctioneer
moved on and I decided to discontinue
auctions and expanded into estate sales.
This part of the business has grown tremendously and we usually do about ten
to twelve estate sales per year.
With the closing of the auction house we
didn’t need all the extra space and with
the grace of God lightening struck twice
and our original store front became available again. Wicker & More reopened and
needed more space for their growing inventory and we swapped buildings, again.
December 2012 we settled back into our
familiar “new-old” digs and love it. And
most of the customers love it too; it’s not
so overwhelming. Under one roof we
give you a blast from the past featuring
unique and rare findings. Over 50 dealers displaying antiques, vintage glass-

ware, collections, decorative items, eclectic furniture, rugs, tools, and so much
more. Inventory changes daily so you
will see something new every time you
stop in. Our customers discover treasures for gift giving, hard to find items
or just remembering something familiar
from a long time ago.
Our estate sale business is flourishing!
With the onset of people downsizing,
moving or just cleaning out we specialize in taking care of the “nuts and bolts”
of the sale. We can liquidate an entire
home, garage or storage area. Our experience takes the guess work out of price
haggling or dealing with the sale.
Since we no longer consign furniture we
now offer the service of taking items to
auction and deal with an auction house in
Conway, SC which has proven first-rate
for our auctioning needs.
Ken and I, along with the staff of The
Fancy Flea are excited to be of service
here in South Brunswick by providing an
eclectic store in which to shop and the
ability to facilitate your needs on a larger
scale. So do drop in and visit with us at
The Fancy Flea and call us for your estate
sale needs – you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
