Notables:
 Omaha split its road series with No. 16 North Dakota, losing 4-2 on Friday before rebounding
for a 6-3 win on Saturday.
 Two players tied for the team scoring lead during the series with four points each. Josh
Archibald had three goals and an assist while Dominic Zombo had a goal and three assists.
 Archibald had all three of his goals in Saturday’s win. It marked the third consecutive series a
Maverick has had a hat trick this season. Archibald put up three at Miami on Jan. 18, and
Zombo had three against St. Cloud State on Feb. 1.
 Archibald’s natural hat trick on Saturday was not only his second of the season but the third of
his career to rank him first in school history. With 21 career goals, he has reached a new career
high for goals in a season.
 On Friday, defenseman Brian Cooper scored his first collegiate goal in his 57th career game.
 Archibald leads the Mavericks in scoring with 21 goals and 11 assists for 32 points. His goal
total leads the NCHC while he is third in league points.
 Archibald is tied for third overall in goals in the NCAA and ranks third in the country with an
average of .81 goals per game.
 Zombo and Ryan Walters are tied for second in team scoring with 24 points. Zombo’s 13 goals
are a new career high. They are tied with Denver’s Trevor Moore for 10th in NCHC scoring.
 Jake Guentzel earned three assist last week and is now tied with Brock Montpetit for fourth in
team scoring with 22 points. He ranks second in freshman scoring in the NCHC, leads all
conference rookies in assists and is tied with Miami’s Riley Barber for second among all players
in that category.
 Guentzel’s assist total puts him in a tie with Scott Parse for the second all-time among UNO
rookies. The school standard is 26 assists by Greg Zanon during his freshman year (1999-2000).
 Freshman defenseman Ian Brady is tied with two others for fourth in NCHC defenseman scoring
with four goals and 12 assists for 16 points. That total also puts him in a tie with St. Cloud
State’s Ryan Papa for fifth among NCHC freshmen.
 Archibald’s third goal in Saturday’s win over UND was his 50th career goal. He is now one of just
six players in UNO history to hit that milestone. Walters’ next goal will be his 50th.
 The Mavs are second in the NCAA and lead the NCHC averaging 35.31 shots per game. They are
eighth in the NCAA and lead the NCHC, allowing just 26.88 shots per game.
 The Mavericks’ penalty killing unit stopped all 10 power plays for North Dakota last weekend.
The Mavs have killed off 34 of the last 35 opponent power plays (97.1 percent).







Ryan Walters has played in 140 consecutive games, putting him 10th among current NCAA
players.
Walters is fourth in career scoring at UNO with 124 points after picking up a goal last weekend.
The Mavericks host Denver on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15, to complete their four-game
season series.
In November, the Mavericks beat the Pioneers by identical 3-2 scores in overtime on Nov. 1-2
with Archibald delivering the game-winning goal each night. They were UNO’s first-ever wins in
the Mile High City.
Omaha trails the all-time series with Denver, 5-12-2, and is 3-4-0 vs. DU at home.

Men’s Basketball

Notables:
 The Omaha men’s basketball team won its final non-conference matchup Wednesday morning
against Peru State, 86-62, and pulled away from Western Illinois in the final minutes to win 7160 on Saturday afternoon.
 After trailing by two in the opening minutes of the game, Omaha used 50.7% shooting from the
field to cruise to a 24-point win against Peru State. Mike Rostampour led all Maverick scorers
for the game with a career-high 24 points to go along with 12 rebounds.
 CJ Carter joined Rostampour with 18 points and three assists, marking the fourth time in five
games that the Omaha junior has reached double figures.
 Saturday saw four Maverick players reach double figures including a 19-point effort by John
Karhoff. The senior from Omaha added eight rebounds and an assist while Justin Simmons
matched his effort with 19 points of his own.
 Karhoff ranks 67th nationally among Division I players with a 85.7 free throw percentage while
senior guard Alex Phillips is 59th with a 45.9 3-point shooting percentage.
 As a team, Omaha ranks sixth with a 76.9 free throw percentage, 21st with 16.0 assists per
game and 18th with 81.5 points per game.
 Following its home games this week, Omaha will hit the road for the final time this season,
traveling to South Dakota on Thursday, February 20. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Dakota Dome
in Vermillion, S.D., and links to live stats, video and audio will be available on OMavs.com. The
game will be broadcast live on KOZN 1620 AM with Gary Sharp calling the action.
Women’s Basketball

Notables:
 The Omaha women's basketball team played one of its best road games of the season but
couldn’t hold off a Western Illinois comeback in a 71-65 defeat in Macomb, Ill., last Thursday. It
was the only game of the week for the Mavericks as they enjoyed a rare weekend off.
 The Mavs are now 9-13 overall and 1-7 in the Summit League. Omaha has dropped its last six
games.
 Five Mavs finished in double figures. Mikaela Shaw had a double-double with 12 points and 11
rebounds. Ericka House had 15 points, Felicia Anderson had 13, Sami Pawlak had 11 points and
nine rebounds, and Taijhe Kelly had 10 points and seven boards.
 Omaha raced to a 22-10 lead to start the game, keyed by a 14-2 run. The Mavs recorded 13
steals in the first half en route to a 32-24 halftime lead. But the Leathernecks used an 18-0 run
spanning both halves to claim a 38-32 lead and never trailed again, despite the Mavs cutting
the lead to three late in the game.
 House continues to rank third in the league in scoring at 17.1 points per game. She is also the
top free throw shooter in the league at 90.7 percent and has made 22 straight foul shots dating
back to Jan. 5.
 In conference play, the Mavs are first in blocked shots per game (3.4) and second in steals per
game (9.9). UNO is holding conference foes to 42.7 percent shooting from the field to rank
fourth in the league. The Mavs are also fourth in offensive rebounds per game (11.9).
 Taijhe Kelly ranks 11th nationally and leads the Summit League with 3.1 blocked shots per
game.
 The Mavs make a road trip to the Dakotas this week. Omaha takes on South Dakota State on
Thursday at 7 p.m., then continues north for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday at North Dakota State.
Baseball

Notables:
 The Omaha baseball team opens the 2014 season this Friday, Feb. 14, facing Tennessee and
Purdue in Knoxville, Tenn.
 The Mavericks open with two games on Friday at 11 a.m. CT, followed by a single game against
Purdue on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT and a single game against Tennessee on Sunday at 11 a.m.
CT.
 Omaha, which went 27-22 (20-6 Summit League) last season, won the 2013 Summit League
regular-season championship. It marked UNO's first Division I conference title in any sport.
 UNO returns 20 letterwinners from its 2013 squad including eight position starters. Four are
returning All-Summit honorees: first-team selections Tyler Splichal and Alex Mortensen and
second-team picks Brett Bass and Clayton Taylor.
 The Mavericks are favored to repeat as regular-season league champions in 2014 as they were
picked first in the preseason coaches’ poll released last week.

Softball
Friday – Sunday, Feb. 14-16 – at Tiger Invitational at Auburn, Ala.
Record: 3-2
Notables:
 The Mavericks opened the season at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah and went 3-2 on
the weekend. The Mavs defeated Weber State (7-0), Utah Valley (4-0) and Idaho State (6-3).
Omaha’s losses came to Southern Utah (5-1) and Utah State (6-0).
 Dana Elsasser went 3-0 in her three starts at the Red Desert Classic. She posted a 1.29 ERA with
two shutouts and completed all three games. On the week, Elsasser pitched 21.0 innings with
11 hits allowed, three earned runs, five walks and 21 strikeouts. She allowed only one extrabase hit all weekend and held her opponents to a .151 batting average. Elsasser began the
season with 19.1 straight scoreless innings pitched.
 Campbell Ditto started her sophomore season with a bang, hitting .333 with three home runs in
five games. Ditto was 5-for-15 at the plate with team highs of five RBI and five runs scored and
a 1.000 slugging percentage. She tallied three homers through the first four games and also
added a double while drawing two walks and a hit by pitch.
 UNO head coach Jeanne Scarpello reached her 600th career win in the season-opening victory
over Weber State. Scarpello, the all-time winningest coach in UNO softball history, now has an
all-time record of 602-190-1 in her 15th year as the head coach of the Mavs.
 Amber Lutmer reached base in every game on the weekend to extend her consecutive reached
base streak to 38 games dating back to last season. Lutmer notched her first homer of the
season in the 7-0 win over Weber State.
 For the tournament, Allie Mathewson hit a team-best .429 and drew five walks while freshman
Lia Mancuso hit .417. Sydney Hames hit .400 with three RBI.
 The Mavericks continue their stretch of six straight weekend tournaments at the Tiger
Invitational in Auburn, Ala., this week. UNO will face Winthrop, Loyola Chicago, Marshall,
Auburn and Western Illinois.
Swimming & Diving
Up Next:
Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 19-22 – at Summit League Championship at Indianapolis, Ind.
Notables:
 The Omaha swimming & diving team was idle last week.
 Omaha closes the 2014 season next month at the Summit League Championships, Feb. 19-22,
in Indianapolis, Ind.

Men’s Golf
Up Next:
Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 10-11 – Carlton Oaks Invitational hosted by Western Illinois at San Diego, Calif.
Notables:
 The Mavericks resume play in the spring half of their season this week at the Carlton Oaks
Invitational hosted by Summit League member Western Illinois in San Diego, Calif.
 Mitch Ryan led the Mavericks during the fall season with a scoring average of 76.1 and two top10 finishes. Karl Krieser was second with a 76.3 average and one top-10 finish.
 Following this week’s tournament, the Mavericks won’t return to action until March 3-4 when
they take part in the Sacramento State Invitational.
Men’s Tennis
Up Next:
Saturday, Feb. 15 – at Western Illinois, 10 a.m. at Macomb, Ill.
Notables:
 The Mavericks continue Summit League play this week when they visit Western Illinois on
Saturday, Feb. 15.
 The Mavericks dropped their Summit League opening match to league newcomer Denver, 7-0,
on Feb. 9.
 Denver swept all three matches for the doubles point before winning all six singles matches in
straight sets.
 In singles play, Eric McKnight put up the toughest fight at No. 1, losing 6-2, 6-2 as Erik Anderson
lost at No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Yannik James. Adam Dockery (No. 2) and Lukas
Vanzura (No. 6) both dropped their decisions 6-0, 6-0 while James McManus (No. 3) and Nathan
Greteman (No. 5) lost 6-1, 6-0.
 Next week, UNO takes on in-state rival Creighton on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m.
Women’s Tennis
Up Next:

Notables:
 The Mavericks return to action following a week off, traveling to Northern Iowa on Saturday,
Feb. 15.
 The last time out, Hylan Miller and Lindsay Weideman highlighted a 7-0 Maverick win against
Nebraska Wesleyan by defeating their opponents in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, respectively.
 The Mavs are on the road for their next three matches before returning home on March 3 for a
non-conference match against Doane.

Track & Field
Up Next:
Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15 – at Iowa State Classic, 11 a.m. at Ames, Iowa
Notables:
 The Mavericks competed both at Nebraska and South Dakota last weekend.
 Katarina Zarudnaya set a school record in the mile on Saturday, finishing first with a time of
4:54.62, at the Frank Sevigne Invitational at NU.
 Sami Spenner continued her dominance by winning the 60 meter dash, 60 meter hurdles and
the 200 meter dash at South Dakota.
 Spenner’s time of 7.52 in the 60 meter dash was only two tenths of second shy of the school
record, and her time of 8.57 in the 60 meter hurdles was a new personal best.
 Three Maverick athletes finished in the top eight of the long jump as Kathie-Lee Laidley (1),
Payton Horacek (5), and Nicole Liske (6) all recorded marks that put them in the top 15 of the
Summit League indoor performance list.
 Ashley Kildow finished runner-up in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:21.44 while Lauren
Psota finished seventh with a time of 2:23.73.
 Amanda Conlin just missed out on placing in the top eight of the shot put, finishing ninth with a
throw of 40-04 3/4 while Liz Thompson finished 10th with a throw of 39-09 ¾.
 The Mavericks return to action at the Iowa State Classic on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15.
Community
Notables:
 UNO is partnering with the Boy Scouts Explorer program. Six area high school students signed
up for the UNO Sports Management Post through the Boy Scouts Explorers program and will be
attending several UNO games. Students will have the opportunity to be a part of the behindthe-scenes action at hockey and men’s basketball games.
 UNO hosted the families and Kids of the Children’s Respite Center at the men’s basketball game
on Wednesday, Feb 5 against Peru State.
 Special Olympics kids and families came out to watch the men’s basketball team when they
took on Western Illinois on Feb 8.
