Notables:
 Omaha split its final series of the regular season, losing at Minnesota Duluth, 8-2, before
bouncing back for a 4-1 win to snap a five-game losing streak against the Bulldogs.
 Two freshmen led the Mavericks in scoring last weekend with four points each. Jake Guentzel
had a goal and three assists while defenseman Ian Brady, just returned from the injury list, had
four assists. Michael Young and Dominic Zombo each scored two goals.
 Josh Archibald had one goal last weekend, the game winner in Saturday’s 4-1 victory. That
helped him up his NCHC-leading goal total to a career best 29. It also was his sixth game
winner, also an NCHC best.
 Archibald is tied with Miami’s Austin Czarnik for the NCHC scoring lead with 43 points. In
addition to leading the NCHC in goals and game-winning goals, he’s also tied for second with
eight powerplay goals.
 Guentzel’s four-point weekend moved him into the outright lead in freshman scoring in the
NCHC for all games played with 32 points. With 25 assists, he is one from tying the school
record for assists by a freshman. He also moved to within three points of tying the school
record for points by a freshman.
 In NCHC games only, Archibald leads in points (32), goals (21), powerplay goals (7) and game
winners (5). Guentzel is tied for second in points (27) by all players, is first in freshman points
and is first in assists for all players (21). Young is third in defenseman scoring with 16 points
and is tied for first with 11 powerplay points. Brady is tied for fourth in defenseman scoring
with 15 points.
 With a three-point weekend, Michael Young moved into a tie for first for defenseman scoring in
the NCHC for all games with 22 points. His 19 assists are best among league d’men. His three
goals have come on just seven shots over the last three games.
 Archibald is second in the NCAA in goals, trailing only Boston College’s Johnny Gaudreau who
has 30. With .85 goals scored per game, Archibald also ranks second in the country.
 Dominic Zombo and Guentzel are tied for 10th in NCHC scoring for all games with 32 points,
totals that have them tied for second on the team. Zombo has reached a new career high with
16 goals. He ranks fourth in the NCHC with seven powerplay goals.
 Ryan Walters paces the team with 25 assists, putting him in a tie with Guentzel for second in
the NCHC for all games played. He is just five from tying his career high for assists in a season.
He is fourth on the team with 31 points.












Freshman Austin Ortega (9-10-19) is tied with Miami’s Anthony Louis for ninth in NCHC
freshman scoring. Ortega is fourth in rookie goals.
Archibald is fourth all-time at UNO with 58 career goals. He is three goals from tying Jeff
Hoggan for third.
Young also moved into third all-time among UNO defensemen with 55 career assists, putting
him 14th among all UNO players. His 19 assists this season are a new career high.
The Mavs are seventh in the NCAA and lead the NCHC averaging 34.09 shots per game. They
are eighth in the NCAA and lead the NCHC, allowing just 26.76 shots per game.
The Mavericks’ penalty killing unit stopped seven of nine power plays for Minnesota Duluth last
weekend. The Mavs have killed off 66 of the last 70 opponent power plays over a span of 16
games (94.3 percent). They lead the NCHC in penalty killing for conference games only (97/109,
89 percent).
Ryan Walters has played in 148 consecutive games, putting him 10th among current NCAA
players.
The Mavericks will host Denver in the first round of the NCHC Playoffs on Thursday, Friday and
Saturday, if necessary, March 13-15. Thursday and Friday’s games begin at 7:37 p.m., and
Saturday’s game starts at 7:07 p.m. This is the first playoff meeting between the two schools.
The Mavericks were 3-1-0 vs. Denver this season, including a pair of 3-2 overtime wins. They
were 1-1-0 vs. the Pioneers at home.
Omaha trails the all-time series with Denver, 6-13-2, and is 4-5-0 vs. the Pioneers all-time on
home ice.

 -Senior guard Justin Simmons won his semi-final round matchup for the Dark Horse Dunker
competition on Monday morning. Simmons now advances to the final round and is pitted
against Marcus Lewis of Eastern Kentucky, and the winner will earn a spot in the College Slam
Dunk Championship to be held April 3 in Dallas before Final Four weekend.
 Voting is open for one week and closes on Monday, March 17 at Noon (CT). Fans may vote daily

 Omaha picked up a series-opening win at Grand Canyon, 6-0, before dropping the last three
games of the series.
 Tyler Fox (1-1) picked up the win after keeping GCU batters at bay, giving up only two hits and
one walk. Fox struck out a career-high-tying six batters in 7.0 innings pitched.
 Omaha was not able to get anything going offensively in a doubleheader on Saturday, falling 92 in game one before dropping game two, 14-0, in seven innings.
 The Mavs’ offensive woes continued into Sunday as Omaha saw a ninth-inning rally fall short,
dropping the final game of the series, 5-2. Omaha outhit GCU 12-10 for the game but left nine
players on base.
 For the weekend, sophomore Cole Gruber hit .500 (8-for-16) with two doubles, a triple, three
runs scored and an RBI.
 Omaha look to rebound this week with a non-conference road trip to Kansas State on
Wednesday, March 12 at 6:30 p.m. The Mavericks open their home schedule this weekend
against Air Force. The three-game series begins on Friday, March 14 at 1 p.m. at the Ballpark at
Boys Town. First pitch on Saturday and Sunday also will be at 1 p.m.

Notables:
 The Mavericks went 2-1 at the weather-shortened Colorado State Classic in Fort Collins, Colo.
Omaha posted the best record among the four teams in the tournament and is now 14-8 on the
season. The Mavs opened with an 8-2 loss to Southern Utah, but responded with an 8-0 (6 inn.)
win over Dayton and a 4-0 win over host Colorado State to cap the tournament.
 Dana Elsasser made a strong case for Summit League Pitcher of the Week with 13.0 shutout
innings on the weekend to earn both Maverick wins. Opponents hit just .114 against her.
Elsasser pitched a one-hitter in the win over Dayton and allowed just four hits to Colorado State









on Sunday. She struck out 11 batters on the weekend and is now 11-3 this season with a 1.47
ERA.
Amber Lutmer hit .429 with a homer, RBI, four runs scored and five walks. Her home run
against Dayton was the 44th of her career, tying Leslie Svoboda for UNO’s career home runs
record. Lutmer is hitting. 375 and now has 10 home runs and 31 RBI this season to lead the
Summit League.
Allie Mathewson and Sydney Hames each hit .364 over the weekend. Mathewson had a home
run, four runs scored and three RBI and continues to lead the team at the plate with a .403
batting average. Hames continued her strong sophomore season and is now hitting .325 to rank
third on the team.
The Mavs have just one tournament remaining before beginning their home and Summit
League schedule. UNO visits Champaign, Ill., this weekend for the Fighting Illini Classic. The
Mavs are scheduled to play four games – two against Western Michigan and one each against
Saint Louis and Illinois.
UNO’s home opener is set for Tuesday, March 18 against Wichita State at 5 p.m. at Westside
Field at Westbrook. The Mavs are also set to begin Summit League play at home March 21-22
against South Dakota.

Men’s Golf
Up Next:
Monday-Tuesday, March 24-25 – at UALR/First Tee Collegiate Classic, 9 a.m. at Little Rock, Ark.
Notables:
 The Mavericks finished 11th at the Sacramento State Invitational last week, their second
tournament of the spring season.
 Karl Krieser led the Mavericks in scoring for the 54-hole event, shooting 223 including a final
round of 71 that ties for the third best round shot by a Maverick this season.
 Mitch Ryan also carded a 71 in round three and was second in scoring for UNO at 228.
 For the season, Krieser leads the Mavericks with a stroke average of 76.1 while Alex Overfelt is
second at 77.1 and Ryan is third at 77.4.
 The Mavericks return to action on Monday and Tuesday, March 24-25 when they take part in
the UALR/First Tee Collegiate Classic at Little Rock, Ark.
Women’s Golf

 The Mavericks were idle last week.
 For the season, Katie Kesti leads the Mavericks with a stroke average of 80.4. Sophie Peters is
second at 81.
 The Mavericks are off until they take part in the Ocala Spring Tournament in Ocala, Fla. on
March 24-25.

Men’s Tennis

Notables:
 Omaha won two home matches over the weekend, sweeping Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday
before defeating Hastings, 7-0 on Sunday.
 The Mavs won both doubles matches and all four singles matches played Saturday as Kansas
Wesleyan only brought four players due to injury. Adam Dockery and Eric McKnight teamed up
for a No. 1 doubles win 8-1 while James McManus and Colin Buckley picked up an 8-0 win at
No. 2 doubles.
 In singles play, both Dockery and Erik Anderson picked up 6-1, 6-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 3
singles, respectively. Colin Buckley pushed past Daniel Railsback at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-1, while
Nathan Greteman defeated Luciano Cucinotta 6-0, 6-0.
 Sunday was more of the same for the Mavs as they swept Hastings College, 7-0. Dockery and
McKnight teamed up for the second day in a row at No. 1 doubles, picking up an 8-5 win over
Mckay Inman and Seton Bachle. Tyler Mercier made his season debut, teaming up with Colin
Buckley for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles while McManus and Anderson defeated Joe Ritzdorf
and Tanner Sandvick at No. 3 doubles, 8-4.
 In singles play, Mercier picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Inman, and Dockery was
victorious 6-0, 6-1 over Bachle at No. 2. McKnight defeated Ritzdorf, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3, while
Colin Buckley outlasted Isaac Mertens 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 at No. 4. James McManus improved to 4-2
on the season with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles, and Erik Anderson picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win
over Sandvick.
 The Mavs will hit the road for an eight-match road trip starting Friday. The trip includes
matches against Oklahoma State, Arkansas, and Miami (Fla.). Omaha will start the road trip
with matches against Lamar at 9 a.m., before playing Oklahoma State at 1 p.m. on March 13 in
Stillwater, Okla.
Women’s Tennis
Up Next:
Friday, March 21 – at Nova Southeastern, 3 p.m. CT at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Notables:
 Omaha went 2-1 over the weekend, falling to Portland State on Friday, 6-1, before rebounding
to sweep Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday and Hastings on Sunday by identical scores of 7-0.
 Alex Tran went 2-0 at No. 1 singles over the weekend, picking up the lone point for the Mavs on
Friday against Portland State. She also defeated Elizabeth Harlow of Hastings in straight sets, 60, 6-0.
 On Saturday against KWU, Omaha won both doubles matches by a score of 8-0 before winning
all five singles matches in straight sets. The visiting Coyotes had five players on the court, with
their roster limited due to injury. Molly Matricardi (No. 1), Lindsay Weideman (No. 2) and




Tiffany Hottman (No. 4) all won their respective singles matches 6-0, 6-0. Jacqueline Baude
picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, while Maddie Holscher defeated Rachel Hasch, 6-1, 6-4
at No. 5 singles.
Omaha finished the home portion of its 2014 schedule with a 3-2 record, winning its last two
matches. The last time Omaha finished with a winning record at home was the 2009-10 season
when it went 4-3 at home.
The Mavs will have two weeks off before playing their last two non-conference matches.
Omaha will be in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for a match against Nova Southeastern on Friday, March
21 at 3 p.m. before travelling to Miami, Fla., to take on Florida International on March 25.

Track & Field
