Insulating oils or simply transformer oils ( visit here ) are known for their ability to remain stable
even at high temperatures. They also possess excellent electrical insulating characteristics.
These are the qualities that make these oils an ideal choice to be used in transformers. Oil filled
transformers, high voltage capacitors, fluorescent lamp ballasts, and some types of high voltage
switches and circuit breakers largely make use of insulating oils.
Oils serve for insulation, suppress corona and arcing, and also act as cooling agents inside the
machines. However, they have to be kept absolutely dry and clean so as to achieve the optimal
insulating performance and dielectric strength. This is what calls for the need of transformer oil
Why to Filter Oils?
Transformer oils tend to deteriorate with time and start decaying gradually. In addition to these
reasons, high temperatures, the presence of oxygen and water, the catalytic action of the
materials present within the transformer; everything combines to result in deteriorating the
condition of the oil. Such processes also tend to release certain by products that are highly acidic
- finally resulting in high deterioration of the oils; and ultimately the transformers.
Such contaminated oil almost has no insulating properties and this greatly affects the
transformer's life. Such transformers with retarded performance would almost fail in the long run.
Thus, the insulating properties of transformer oils must be maintained by carrying out periodic
filtration process through filtration machines.
Transformer oil filtration is needed to improve the properties of insulation oil. It serves to
effectively remove the acidity, over moisture, traces of water, dissolved gases, and particulate
matter from the insulating oil very rapidly - which ultimately boosts the performance levels of
transformers, circuit breakers, mutual inductors, cables, and capacitors. All these equipment and
machinery have an insulation system.
A typical oil filtration system consists of:
•Preliminary filter - To prevent any damage to inlet pump by straining magnetic & all other
particles above 1mm size
•The cleaning of the filter is possible without dismantling the filter from the pipeline
•Pre-filter – To remove particles larger than 20 microns. It will be suitable for removing sludge
content in the used oil. This will enhance the life of fine filter
•Cartridge filter placed inside a steel housing
A typical transformer oil filtration machine is of mobile type which is mounted on four pneumatic
wheels with towing and lifting arrangement. It can be roller mounted or skid mounted as per the
requirement of the transformer. The filtration plant is normally weather proofed and is best
