Design Concept
Overview
User Interaction
When I was considering the functionality
for this app, I ultimately decided on a
concept that was more open ended than just
reunions. My goal was to design a consumer
product that fulfilled the stated
requirements, but was also useful to as many
people as possible, including myself.
Ultimately I arrived on the concept of a
"Getaway". A getaway is any organized trip
for your friends, which my be a reunion, but
also might just be a weekend trip to Tahoe or
a family vacation.
Given the limited scope of this project, I
wanted to limit the functionality to only
one additional feature beyond the
requirements, which I ultimately decided
from a few customer discovery calls
should be related to how a group deals
with the financial details of a shared
getaway.
Most of the user interactions
presented herein are fairly
standard. The only complex
interaction is the screen showing a
calendar. This would allow the user
to touch a start date and drag to
the end date. After which, a new
date would be populated below as a
poll option. This step could be
repeated as many times as desired.
Process
- Customer Discovery (3, five min calls)
- Problem/Solution Mapping
- Brand/Concept Exploration
- Architecture Mindmapping
- Analog Sketching
- Omnigraffle wireframing
- Illustrator Design (icons, etc.)
The flow presented in this deck also
assumes two general types of users:
getaway hosts and getaway guests. This
flow was created from the view of a
host, to show additional functionality.
Also, to note, I went ahead and
designed higher fidelity mock-ups of all
screens. Being that this is not intended
for production, it actually isn't
significantly faster for me to do just
wireframes. It is however, significantly
more fun to end up with something that
has real emotional appeal.
Other than that, the menu is visible
at any time by gesturing to the right.
Also to note, the financial
reconciliation feature would require
a very simple algorithm that would
determine the total amount owed
by each participant, and then pair
people who paid more and less
than that amount to be reconciled
using Venmo's Payment API.
