Progressive Christians – University of Essex
We are a new society which is currently undergoing the Societies Guild process of
If all goes smoothly we are going to be ratified before the end of this academic year.
We already have contacted the Student Christian Movement (SCM) for affiliation,
and we should become part of their national organisation as soon as we are ratified
by the Societies Guild.
In one sentence what we shall strive to be is a society promoting
A progressive faith, inclusive to all, open and affirming, and shown in action
For a less concise explanation of what we are / shall be, this is the about text of our
■ To provide a truly inclusive society for all people who define themselves as
Christian or are interested in the Christian faith, creating an open, welcoming and
safe space for all, regardless of gender, race, belief, sexuality and ability.
■ To grow in an inclusive, aware and radical faith, a faith which is shown in action.
■ To build a community together through prayer, worship, and socialising
■ To be a Student Christian Movement (SCM) presence in the University
■ To welcome all, no matter who they are, whom they love or where they are in
■ To campaign against injustice and violence, whether locally or not
■ To think through our faith to ensure it remains relevant and dynamic, whilst being
open to discussion and different points of view
■ To engage with political and social issues as a prophetic voice for change
■ To promote volunteering according to one's own abilities and vocations
■ Unfundamentalist Christians
■ Student Christian Movement (soonish)
