Lubbock Habitat to dedicate 127th house
Local resident will receive keys to her newly constructed home
[LUBBOCK, TX] ([February 7, 2014]) — Lubbock Habitat will dedicate its 127th home at a
ceremony on Monday, February 17, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. at 2201 Duke Street. At the celebration, the
organization will present the keys to Asya Harris, recipient of the new home.
Through donations of money and materials and volunteer labor, Lubbock Habitat was able to
build the home and sell it at an affordable price. Harris purchased the home with a no-profit,
no-interest loan, and her monthly mortgage payments will be used to build more Habitat
houses. As a requirement of the program, Harris completed 500 hours of “sweat equity”,
working on her home and the homes of others.
“It’s exciting that I’m going to be able to move in soon. I’m thankful for this opportunity and for
all of the donors and volunteers that have helped me reach this goal,” said Harris.
Construction costs for the home were sponsored by grants from The CH Foundation and First
United Methodist Church on Broadway. Labor was supplied by several volunteer groups
including the U.S. Marine Corps and students from Texas Tech University.
The dedication will consist of several guest speakers. Additionally, Harris will be presented
with gifts from Lubbock Habitat. At the end of the ceremony, supporters will be invited inside
for a tour of the home.
Individuals interested in becoming a Habitat homeowner should attend the next Homeowner
Workshop scheduled for April 26, 2014 at the Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center at
3201 Avenue Q.
