Arizona’s first AKC Bench Show

Arizona’s first AKC Bench Show was a hit with spectators and exhibitors alike!  As
part of the Fiesta Cluster, Scottsdale Dog Fanciers Association and Superstition
Kennel Club hosted the exciting event.  The judges were George Bowlton and
Kitty Steidel.   Despite rain, we had a great first turn out, with 10 entries on
Saturday, and a record setting 15 entries on Sunday.   It was exciting to see all
the diverse group of Coonhound people there to support the event.  We had
those who hunt, and show in UKC field trials, to those who are hard-core AKC
conformation exhibitors.  It was refreshing to see sportsmanship, with everyone
encouraging and supporting one another, and jumping in to handle each other’s
dogs as needed.   George Bowlton enjoyed judging the show so much, he
offered to come and judge again next year.  Kitty Steidel also sent a wonderful
thank-you note for choosing her as one of our judges and allowing her the
experience to judge the Coonhound on the Bench.   But, most of all, if it was not
for the help of all the volunteers, and people who stepped outside of the box
to try a new event, it would have not  been such a success!  A big thank-you to
all of you for your support!  Following are the results of Saturday and Sunday’s
Show results along with a few photos.  More photos can be seen under my Face
Book page.    Thank-you once again for the privilege of being event secretary.

Arizona Coonhound Association Field
Trials and Bench Show
By Holly Baker

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I’ve enclosed a few of the
Arizona Coonhound Association’s Field Trial on February 15th and 16th.  We
had a great turn-out, despite the record hot weather.  I would like to give our
members a big thank-you for their help in running the event, and for all the
young adults who helped in handling dogs.    Arizona Coonhound Association
(ACA) will hold a UKC Bench Show in Buckeye, AZ. on April 5th, 2014.  We will
have more Field Trials this fall, and hopefully a nite hunt or HTX Hunt Test.
Central Arizona Trail Hound Association (CATHA) has 4 Field Trials in the summer.
They are held up north in the cool, green pine country, and have great camping
areas, perfect for the whole family.  They are scheuduled to have a UKC Bench
Show, Field Trial, and Water Race in May.  They mainly have events for unregistered dogs, but do the UKC Events once or twice a year.  There may also be a
UKC Event in July.  This event date is tentative.
CATHA’s Dates are as follows:
• May 24/25th 2014 - UKC Bench Show/FT/WR • There will also be FT/WR for
grade dogs.
• June 28/29 2014 • Grade dogs
• July 26/27th 2014 - UKC FT/WR Event, Tentative!! • There will also be FT/WR for
grade dogs.
• August 30/31 2014 • Grade dogs and year-end awards and raffle.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call me.  The ACA also has
educational seminars and fun runs bi-monthly. Thank-you!

Showing Coonhounds
By Laurie Telfair

Once entered, you will get a packet from the show superintendent about a week
before the show, giving you your ring time and your armband number. Plan to
get to the show a couple of hours before you are to be judged. Find your ring
and get your armband at ringside from the ring steward.
Then watch some of the judging. The pattern you will follow will be the same
as those you are watching. Basically, you’ll enter the ring when your number is
called, along with any other dogs entered in your class. From there, the judge
will probably direct you to trot your dog around the ring, counter-clockwise, to
the other side.

As more American Kennel Club conformation shows include an AKC coonhound
bench show as part of their event, people who enjoy participating in bench
shows might want to add wins to their dogs’ resumes.
If an AKC kennel club offers a coonhound bench show during their weekend,
this show will be in addition to the coonhound classes offered in their regular
conformation show. These shows are separate and offer separate points and
titles to be won during the same (usually) weekend. The AKC bench show will
operate the same as always, although typically the folks putting it on will be
unfamiliar with the form and traditions of coonhound shows. They are kennel
club exhibitors and judges trying to add an attractive event to their shows.
The important thing to note is that the kennel club conformation show offers
coonhound exhibitors a different path to championships and awards. If you
watch the dog show on television after the Thanksgiving Day parades or
Westminster Kennel Club show from New York City, the conformation show is
what leads to those prestigious shows.
For coonhound exhibitors interested in showing in AKC conformation shows,
there are important differences between conformation shows and bench shows.
The most obvious is that in conformation shows, the dogs aren’t shown on a
bench. They are instead stacked, or posed, on the floor or ground. But the most
critical difference is that conformation shows must be entered in advance.
Entries close two and a half weeks before the show. Exhibitors can go to www.
akc.org to find out how to enter an AKC conformation show.

Then you’ll stack your dog and the judge will examine him. It’s okay to tell the
judge that this is your first AKC show. After the exam, the judge will ask you to
move your dog, usually diagonally across the ring, so he or she can watch the
dog move away and come toward him. Always move the dog at a trot.
