2014 Lilac Festival
This weekend in Pine Mountain Club

This weekend, May 17 and 18, for the 32nd time in a
row, the annual Lilac Festival will take place in Pine
Mountain Club.

One of the highlights is the Parade which will start at
10:45 a.m. on Saturday. Hundreds of people usually line

Mil Potrero Highway to cheer local groups, non-profits,
and businesses that participate in the parade.
After the parade there is ample of opportunity to visit the
over 100 Arts & Crafts booths, along with international
food vendors, restaurants and unique shops displaying
handmade crafts and clothing, and a kiddie amusement
area.

Pine Cone Parlor, the original restaurant occupying the
space where La Leña Mexican Restaurant is now. In the
next couple of years, as the event grew rapidly in size
and popularity, the Festival was made a permanent
annual event sponsored by the Pine Mountain Club
Commercial Property Owners Association. Rosetta
Burgelin took over as Event Chair and successfully put
on the event (with a lot of help, of course) every year for
the next 25 or so. After a few years off, she has taken
over the reins again for the past two Festivals (plus the
Wine in the Pines wine festival, Run to the Pines Car
Show, and two Pine Mt. Club Fall Festivals.)"

Live Music will be provided by a variety of local Bands,
including "Duchicela", "Yesteryear", and Bandit." There
are also lots of places to sit, relax, and enjoy the beautiful
surroundings and landscape of Pine Mountain Club. Even
helicopter rides may be available
This year’s Festival, organized by the Pine Mountain
Club Commercial Property Owner Association, begins at
9 am each day, and ends at 5pm or so. Again, the
traditional Parade Ceremony starts at 10:45 a.m. on
Saturday.
According to the event's Webpage: "The original event
was the brainchild of Judy Watkins, then the owner of the

School Board Meeting on May 8, 2014 – Recognition
for the Student Trustee
Heather Henderson, the Student Trustee on the El Tejon
Unified School District Board received a Certificate of
Appreciation for her service during the school year 201314. Heather is a Senior at Frazier Mountain High School
(FMHS) and will graduate in a few weeks.

El Tejon Middle School
Report to the School Board

Current Enrollment: 218 students
We’re approximately 4 weeks away from Graduation
Day at ETS. Many at-risk students are taking great steps
to reach their goal. In fact, many are sprinting because
they want to achieve 8th grade graduation status.
Consequently there will be many more students
graduating this year compared to last year. Graduation
goal is 95%, and I feel strongly that we will exceed this
goal. Next week, students will receive graduation
packets of information regarding end of year activities
including “graduation day”.
Smarter Balanced Testing started last month and
continued into this month. Today and tomorrow we are
testing the 5th and 8th graders on the CST Science
sections. Fortunately we had very good attendance the
last few weeks and many students completed the Smarter
Balanced Tests. We have one make-up day next week to
take care of a few students that experienced glitches and
were unable to complete the test. Thank you Thomas for
helping us get started on this computer based assessment.
After several days of testing it became evident that for
the most part the problems we experienced were not site
based, but merely program related (SBAC).
Spring Fling Dance is tomorrow night from 6 to 9 p.m.
ASB students and Graduation Committee parents are
preparing for a successful evening. Tickets have been
pre-sold (60 tickets). Tickets will be sold at the door. It’s
clear to see that students are jazzed about this upcoming
event. Not surprising the level of discipline incidents
have dropped. Students know, if they are suspended they
may not attend this event.
State Science Fair competition went very well with our
students participating and representing ETUSD.
Congratulations to William Edwards, Michael and Kelly
Stegeman, and Jacquie Kelly. Thank you Mrs. Bizzini,
Mrs. Areola, and Mrs. Csulak for all your support.
El Tejon Events:
o Physical Fitness Testing is underway and will be
completed by the end of May. Thank you Mr.
Stewart and Mr. Stroh.
o El Tejon Yearbooks on sale until Friday! Thank you
Mr. Mullen & Yearbook Staff!
o Art Fair – Mrs. Maxwell and Mrs. Bizzini have
scheduled this year’s event on May 15th (judging)

and 16th. Art Projects will be on display both days
for parents and visitors to view.
Talent Show – Mrs. Swarthout is preparing students
for this year’s show on May16th.
Staff Appreciation Week is May 18th! Our student
groups are planning something special each day of
that week for our teachers (originally this weekpostponed).
Graduation Committee has raised enough funds for
our students to go to Universal Studios on June 2,
2014. Thank you parents! Thank you Mr. and Mrs.
Camacho for the use of your facilities and hosting the
Car Wash!
PTSO – Has voted on providing ELMO’s or
Docucams and Projectors for every teacher at El
Tejon next year. Thank you PTSO and Mr. John
Fleming for your generous contribution and
dedication to El Tejon School.
Field Trips – 6th Grade is going to the Ocean
Institute on May 19th/20th. 7th Graders are going to
CSUB to take a campus tour. Thank you PTSO for
funding field trips!
Sports – Our softball teams have been actively
engaged in practice and on-site games with
competing neighboring school teams. Mr. Stewart
and the coaches have been doing an excellent job of
preparing our teams for this extra-curricular activity.

Help needed to build Softball Fields

Director El Tejon School
El Tejon School is looking to have their own softball
facility/backstop field as they now have (3) school
softball teams but no real field per se to practice or host
games on; and are in need of some donations or items at
a greatly reduced rate. The items being:
o concrete mix,
o chain link fencing which can be in various
heights from 4 foot,
o 8 foot-10 foot,
o poles for chain link fences,
o brackets for fences, tension bars for fences,
o top rails,
o top rail sleeves,
o infield dirt, and
o other various misc. parts for the fencing.
We could put up a sign on the field if a business donated
items or whatever they felt would be worthy, but any

help of even Labor offered to help INSTALL the fencing
would be greatly appreciated. If interested or can help in

Frazier Park Elementary School
Report to the School Board

The Frazier Park PTSO hosted their Pop Corn
Extravaganza this past month. They have also agreed to
purchase additional rolls of lamination for our laminator
machine. They continue to help our school in any way
they can. We are so proud of our PTSO!
o The Boys & Girls Club is providing funding for an
after school reading intervention program being run
by Mary Hon and Susan Bates. This program will
serve to supplement our RTI efforts at the school.
They are also funding to have Michael Forrester
provide tutoring in the areas of Science and Social
studies and for Monica Darling to provide
technology enrichment activities.
o Mr. Forrester also ran the Science Fun activities after
school on April 29 and May 1 & 2. These science
activities consisted of first “Sink of Float?” followed
by “Magnets” and “Oobleck—Explore a very strange
substance.” Flyers were sent home for parents to sign
their students up for one, two or all three activities
(see attached). There were about 30 students in
attendance for each session.
o Bobcat Sports is underway every Friday at Frazier
Park School. Participation has been very good and

students are learning a lot about sportsmanship and
competition.
Field Trips – On May 2nd the Kindergarten took a
walk to the Library in Frazier Park. On May 7th the
first grade classes attended the CALM Museum in
Bakersfield. On May 16th the Kindergarten will
attend the L.A. Zoo. May 22 the 1st Grade will do a
walking trip to some of the local businesses. On May
30th the third grade classes will visit the Wind
Wolves Preserve. On June 3rd the third and fourth
grade classes will visit the Long Beach Aquarium.
Character Counts Program – For the month of May
we are focusing on the character trait of
“Trustworthiness.”
The transition into the CCSS continues. We have
scheduled PLC time each week at the conclusion of
our weekly staff meetings to discuss successes and
difficulties encountered while working through the
transition into the CCSS.
Earthquake Drill –We had an earthquake drill on
Thur. April 24th. This was intentionally held during
the lunch recess so that students could experience
what they should do and where they should go under
such circumstances. There was some confusion
initially with some students trying to go back to class
and not knowing where to go when the clear signal
was given for the earthquake portion. Overall it took
seven minutes, but it was a good learning experience
and students now know where to go and what to do if
they are out at recess when such an event takes place.
Math Fair – Our Annual Math Fair was held on April
30th in the cafeteria. It was well attended with
between 60-70 students and several parents as well.
Smoke Trailer – On May 22 the Fire Department will
bring their Smoke Trailer to Frazier Park School for
students to experience evacuation techniques in a
smoke filled room.
Animal Show – On June 2nd Jeff Lee will bring his
animals to Frazier Park School and put on his animal
show for the students. There will be one show from
8:30 – 9:30 am in the cafeteria.
First Grade Play – On June 3rd Mrs. Hon’s class will
present the play “Jack and the Bean Stock” in Mrs.
Hon’s room at 6:00 pm. All are invited to attend.
Home & School Connection – See attached for
copies of the materials sent home for May.
Transitional Kindergarten – We are sending out and
posting an informational flyer around the community
and putting it in the paper, about our TK Program. It
