How to Use Adobe Contribute for Microsoft Windows

Getting started
Contribute combines a web publishing and website management tool with a review process for extra
reliability in a WYSIWYG environment.
Are you about to use Contribute for the first time? If so, check out the short list below of steps you can
take to prepare.

Take the Contribute Tutorial

The tutorial is a 10-minute guided walkthrough of the product. To begin the tutorial, choose one of
the following options:
a. On the start page, click Take the Contribute Tutorial.
b. On the browser toolbar, click Help > Contribute Tutorial.

Ensure you have the necessary permissions

Contact your Contribute administrator to ensure you are connected to a web site, and have the
permissions you need to edit pages.

Roles and functions
Adobe Contribute is a robust web development system that functions best when the following three
roles are filled so that they can work in tandem:
Web developers – to build the web site with Adobe Dreamweaver.
Contribute users – to maintain the site. Since Contribute works like a word processor, this role requires
no experience with HTML coding or page design, and is easy to learn. Contribute users can be teachers,
government and corporate employees, students, and in fact anyone who needs to maintain a web site.
Contribute administrators – to give the Contribute users the permissions to edit pages, and help users
get started. Each Contribute web site has one administrator.

The Contribute environment
Contribute uses a “browse-edit-publish” workflow to allow you to find the page you need, modify it, and
then publish it right away. You must be connected to a web site before you can edit and publish pages
on that site.
To support this workflow, Contribute offers users the ease of a WYSIWYG working environment, which
functions as a web browser and page editor. It has three unique features: the Contribute browser and
editor, the Contribute sidebar, and the Toolbars.

1. Contribute browser and editor
Contribute is a great tool for editing web pages because you can switch between browsing and
editing at any time. Contribute saves your changes to any page you are editing to allow you to
return at a later time and continue your work where you left off. Contribute does not publish your
draft when you switch from editing to browsing.

To switch from browsing to editing, do one of the following:
a. Click the Edit Page button on the toolbar.
b. Click a draft title in the Pages panel in the sidebar.

To switch from editing to browsing, do one of the following:
a. Click Browser in the Pages panel in the sidebar.
b. Click the Save for Later button in the toolbar.
c. Select View > Browser.

2. The Contribute sidebar
You can toggle between editing and browsing using the Contribute sidebar. It also gives you quick
access to your drafts, and tips for performing tasks.
The sidebar has two parts divided by the Splitter bar: the Pages panel and the How Do I panel. You
can expand, collapse, and resize the panels and the sidebar.
