Winnipeg’s
winning ways
Winnipeg sometimes
appears overshadowed
by bigger Canadian cities,
but while its boom time
was a century ago,
Manitoba’s capital offers
an intriguing alternative
for urban explorers.
The country’s first new
national museum since
1967, the Canadian
Museum for Human
Rights was designed by
Antoine Predock. Its
dramatic interior —
glowing alabaster walkways beneath a massive
Tower of Hope — houses
interactive galleries on
everything from the
Holocaust to Canada’s
First Nations.
Assiniboine Park Zoo
invested CAD$90 million
(£50m) in its new
Journey to Churchill
exhibit, which explores
climate change and
fragile ecosystems.
Top-billing, however,
goes to its four polar
bears. Selfie-snapping
visitors stroll through a
clear tunnel as furry
swimmers twirl overhead.
In recent years the
handsome buildings of
Winnipeg’s Exchange
District have been
colonised by bars, cafes
and boutique shops,
inviting on-foot
exploration.
Do not miss the
Hermetic Code Tour at
Winnipeg’s Manitoba
Legislative Building, illuminating the startling discovery of thousands of
hidden masonic symbols,
from rooftop sphinxes, to
an ark of the covenant, to
a sacrificial altar.
