SPE South Asia Regional Student Paper Contest 2015
Call For Abstracts
UPES SPE STUDENT CHAPTER is pleased to invite you for SPE South Asia Regional
Student Paper Contest to be held from 12th-13th February 2015. We are very excited and feel
privileged to host this event, and we look forward to welcoming you in University of Petroleum
and Energy Studies (UPES) at Dehradun, India for this gala affair.
This brochure is designed to provide general information about the official Call for abstracts for
the contest.

UPES SPE STUDENT CHAPTER
THE CONTEST:
Competitions will be held in three different categories and papers from undergraduate, postgraduate and phD students will be accepted.
The subject of a paper must be related to petroleum engineering which is defined as the
application of basic and engineering sciences to the finding, development, and recovery of oil,
gas, and other resources from wells and regarding refinery and petrochemicals.
The deadline for submission of your abstract is 20th October, 2014. The abstract should be
received by the due date along with the attached entry form via e-mail:
upesstudents@spemail.org. Please review the entrance requirements included in this Call for
Abstracts.

Reservoir Description and Dynamics
Production and Operations
Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) and Social Responsibility
Projects, Facilities and Construction
Management and Information

Furthermore any topic which overlaps the oil and gas domain and is related to the industry would
also be considered with equal importance.
NOTES ON SUBMITTING YOUR ABSTRACT:
Please complete and return the attached entry form by email to: upesstudents@spemail.org
along with your abstract in ‘word’ or ‘pdf’ format (maximum 300 words) by 20th October, 2014.
Please note that all abstracts must be submitted in English.
IMPORTANT:
Please seek approval from your Institute/University to participate in the Contest and to present
the proposed materials prior to submitting your abstract. You should give a description of the
proposed paper, summarizing its scope and describing any results or conclusions. Your final
paper, if selected, must not differ greatly from the abstract submitted. Details on how to prepare
your paper will be sent to selected contestants.
RULES:
 Only single-author presentation/papers are eligible. The definition of single-author is a
student that has contributed significantly to the presentation/paper even though other

researchers or contributors may have been involved. Researchers and contributors must
be acknowledged within the paper and presentation, but not as an author.
Papers should present, as completely as possible, the original work of the author in
planning the investigation, performing the work, interpreting the results, and preparing
the presentation/paper.
The subject of a presentation/paper must be related to petroleum engineering, which is
defined as the application of basic and engineering sciences to the finding, development,
and recovery of oil, gas, and other resources from wells.
A presentation/paper based on course work, including theses and dissertations, is eligible.
An abstract of the presentation/paper is required even when a formal written paper is
required.
At time of submission, the presentation/paper must not have been accepted for:
o Publication in an SPE peer-reviewed journal
o Presented at previous official SPE Regional Student Presentation/Presentation
(Papers presented at Student Presentation/Paper Contests sponsored by
universities, SPE sections, or other organizations are allowed.)
The presentation/paper must be presented in the English language, the official language
of SPE. All contestants that progress to the International Student Paper Contest must
present in English.
When written papers are required, they must be submitted in a typed form in English. The
paper must consist of a minimum of 1,000 words of text, plus as many diagrams and
supporting illustrations as necessary to clarify the subject matter. The paper must not
exceed 7,000 words equivalent of text and diagrams, with each diagram considered to be
the equivalent of 250 words.
The presentation may not exceed 20 minutes, with a maximum of 10 minutes for
questions from the judges only.

FUNDING & PRIZES:
Entrance fee to the Contest is mentioned in the UPES SPE Participation Invitation 2015 which
has already been sent earlier. The entrance fee will have to be submitted only when the
participant is notified of abstract selection and he/she is coming to the main event. To enter you
must complete the attached entry form and send it along with your typed abstract as indicated.
All applications will be reviewed and the selected candidates will be notified of their
participation.
The expenses incurred for the food and accommodation of the Contestants would be borne by
UPES SPE Student Chapter and is covered under the registration fee.
The winners of the Regional Student Paper Contest qualify for the International Student Paper
Contest to be held during the Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition (ATCE) to be held
on 28th-30th September, 2015, in Houston, Texas, USA.
