Everybody’s Talking!
Cuddling kangaroo: If someone is going to get lost in the
bush, it helps if a kangaroo comes along to share its body heat
on a cold night. That’s what happened to a little boy in the
Deep Creek Conservation Park in South Australia. Simon
Kruger went exploring in the nearby bush and got separated
from his family's picnic. A rescue party was called in and
Simon was found safe and sound the next day. He explained
that he slept under a tree and that kangaroos came to visit him.
One ate the flowers he had picked for his mother, then fell
asleep beside him, keeping him warm during the chilly night.
Doggy heaven: Talk about pampered pets! There is a hotel
in Vienna, Austria, that caters to the dogs of its guests. In the
19th century, the Hotel Sacher was once owned by Anna
Sacher, who loved her French bulldogs. In keeping with the petloving history of the hotel, the current management decided to
provide special rooms with all the things that dogs need, such as
baskets, blankets and feeding bowls. A dog’s owner can obtain
dog food from the concierge or, if desired, can order a steak
from the hotel’s kitchen. Rules do apply, however. Furry guests
are not allowed in the spa or in the restaurants and they must
be kept on leashes at all times.
Bus love: Getting married on a bus is not something most
couples would think to do, but for Nina Schmidt and Jarred
Greff of Vancouver, British Columbia (CAN), it only made
sense. The pair first met on the No. 3 TransLink bus during a
commute one day. They noticed each other, and when a seat
became available beside Nina, Jarred sat down beside her. They
went bowling on their first date and not long after realized they
were in love. It was arranged for wedding guests to take seats
on that very bus to witness the nuptials. Fittingly, the wedding
took place during the city’s “I Love Transit Week,” and it was
sponsored by the transit company.
Caring thieves: Some burglars in San Bernardino County in
California (US) had a change of heart after committing a crime.
In the middle of the night, they broke into a non-profit agency
that helps victims of abuse. They cut alarm wires so they would
not be detected, then stole the agency’s computers. Executive
Director Candy Stallings was upset to discover the theft, but
what happened the next day truly amazed her. The thieves
brought back the computers in a shopping cart and left them at
the front door, along with a heartfelt note of apology stating
that they hoped the agency could continue to make a difference
in people’s lives.

Did You Know...
Extinct bird: Passenger pigeons were once so plentiful in
North America that the sky would become dark when a flock
passed by. These migratory birds became extinct in 1914 when
the last one, known as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoo (US).
Keep your distance! Those who think crocodiles are
dangerous should beware of the box jellyfish, also known as
the sea wasp. These creatures live in waters around Australia
and have deadly toxins in their tentacles.
Potato facts: Potatoes are a staple in the diets of many
people and they have been cultivated for many years. There
are also about 187 species of inedible wild potatoes, with
South America having the highest concentration.
Official name: Few westerners may know that the official
name of Japan is Nippon. This country is a land of islands,
having four large ones and over 3,900 smaller ones.
Ouch! When people bump their 'funny bone,' what they have
actually hit is their humerus, the upper arm bone. However, it is
no laughing matter when this happens, as the nerve endings near
the elbow can result in pain or a tingling sensation when bumped.
On the Lighter Side
The accountant had trouble falling asleep, so he tried counting
sheep.
But then he made a mistake and it took him all night to find it.
Where does satisfaction come from? A satisfactory.
The three stages of getting sick: Ill, Pill, Bill.
A son at college wrote his father: "No mon, no fun, your Son."
The father wrote back: "How sad, too bad, your Dad."
Among the things that are quite easy, even simple for a child
to operate, are the grandparents.
Echo: The only thing that can cheat us out of the last word.
You know you're growing old when your knees buckle but
your belt won't.
