The Weaving
Sisterhoods
Cultural House
Sisterhood is our culture
We are a community-based,
non-profit organization that
works autonomously and has no
affiliation with the government,
any political party or the Church.
Our activities are primarily
cultural and educational, and
our headquarters are in Cali,
Colombia.
Founded in 1976 by a group of
Christians committed to the
struggle of the lower classes
for liberation, The Weaving
Sisterhoods Cultural House
has evolved and changed in a
dynamic process, responding to
the demands of our times and of
the people with whom we work
and live.
Our Vision
We work from a perspective of
active resistance that is critical
of the patriarchal system. Our
priority is to work with women
and children, especially those with
few resources.
We believe in the importance
of environmental conservation
and a better quality of life for all
in healthy communion with the
natural world. We have situated
ourselves in the periphery and
embrace resistance as well as
alternative ways of thinking.
Sisterhood is
our culture
Our Mission
We contribute to a strengthening of the
social fabric from a gender perspective.
We promote and support groups of
women and children, reinforcing their
self-esteem and their awareness of
their rights so they may make a larger
contribution to their neighborhoods
and communities. To accomplish this,
we convene, organize and lend support
to groups and communities of women
that foster critical consciousness and
autonomous development in different
aspects of their personal, social, and
familial lives. Such groups include:
gender and self-esteem groups, cultural
groups promoting the free and creative
expression of one’s dreams, bible-study
and faith-based groups, and support
groups working to help women achieve
economic independence.
We participate in networks of women
who support one another and also
motivate one another to follow their
dreams. In the process, we are able to
promote social consciousness.
Objectives
To generate and support processes
related to the strengthening of
women’s rights and their growth as
persons.
To promote respect for gender,
racial and ethnic differences in our
society.
To teach children to respect others
and to help them develop a creative
and alternative consciousness that
thinks beyond the system.
