SPONSORSHIP BOOKLET 2014 - 2015
OF THE YEAR 2015
Durham University Electric Motorsport (DUEM) is a team of students who design,
build and race cutting edge electric cars. DUEM are currently building their most
ambitious solar powered car yet for entry into the 2015 World Solar Challenge.
This car features a highly aerodynamically and structurally optimised
monocoque chassis, the second generation of the in-wheel motor designed by
the team and 392 silicon solar cells with an efficiency of 22.8%.!
The team consists of over 40 undergraduate and postgraduate students studying
a broad range of degrees including engineering, physics, mathematics, biology,
business and economics. DUEM projects are entirely extra-curricular, and the
leadership and direction of the team is the responsibility of the students. Whilst
we receive technical assistance from the School of Engineering and Computer
Sciences and Business School, we have no financial assistance from the
university and so our sponsors are very important to us!!
Our aim this year is complete the manufacture of our first brand new solar car
since our first car, DUSC01 back in 2004. Our aim is to finish in the top ten in the
2015 World Solar Challenge. We want to promote renewable energy technologies
and showcase British science and technology at home and on the international
stage. We have a proven track record of remaining competitive against bigbudget teams whilst only having a fraction of the budget. In the past we have
made our own motor controller and have even encapsulated our own solar cells.
In the process the team has developed technical expertise and knowledge, with
several previous team members now employed by companies such as McLaren,
Rolls Royce and Force India.
Our long-term vision is to become the world wide number one solar car team, but
also to offer developments unique to our car. For example, our team has
developed an in-wheel electric motor and also excellent aerodynamic analysis
and development capabilities.
DUEM will enter the World Solar Challenge (WSC) in
October 2015 with a brand new Solar Car. The World Solar
Challenge is an arduous 3000 km endurance event held SOLAR CELLS
biennially in Australia. Solar car teams from across the
globe race against each other to be the first car to cover the distance from
Darwin to Adelaide. DUEM will be up against teams from some of the best
universities in the world, most of which have a multi million-dollar budget.
Long distance solar car events are a unique challenge and require a car that is
highly efficient, extremely reliable and able to cruise as fast as the speed limit
This will be our first completely new solar car since our original car
constructed in 2004. The car is currently under construction, and will feature
the following main components:!
A monocoque chassis featuring an asymmetric car layout and structural
392 silicon solar cells of over 22.8% efficiency covering the top surface
of the car!
An in-wheel motor developed by the team!
Lithium Ferrite batteries to store solar energy !
4.5 METRES LONG
1.75 METRES WIDE
Driving the car is the second-generation in-wheel motor,
designed by the team. The new version has a smaller
diameter (which allows us to use low rolling resistance
tyres), and improved electrical performance and better
The aerodynamic shape of the car is essential to our success. Aerodynamic drag
has been minimised by utilising state of the art computational fluid dynamics

Engineering and Computing Sciences.
Since the car will spend a large proportion
of the race cruising at relatively constant
speeds, overcoming the aerodynamic drag
is the largest expenditure of energy. Given
the relatively small amount of energy
available to power the car from the sun
(about the same as a kettle!), minimising
drag and maximising efficiency is
Durham University Formula Student was formed in late 2010 by a group of
students from the university’s engineering society as an extra-curricular project.
The team soon grew in size as more and more students came to be part of this
famous competition, with the university’s prestigious Centre for Automotive
Research becoming a key academic partner for the team. !
Since then the team has gone from strength to strength, entering the design
competition in July 2012, 2013 and 2014. In its first year at the competition the
team finished in 5th place out of the UK teams (7th overall), meaning they were
the highest placed new team and also the highest

NEW TEAM 2012 Class 1 competition.!
Our tiers are very flexible and we aim to provide a package that suits our
sponsors so the following is only a rough guide. If there is anything in particular
which you feel that your company would benefit from then we will be happy to
discuss this with you.

We work with all our sponsors to deliver the best opportunities for their
company. If appropriate we will advertise your company around the Engineering
Department and the main Engineering societies. We will work with our sponsors
to host any recruitment or information events that they might hold and will act
as a point of contact to the Engineering Department.
2014 – 2015 BUDGET
Durham University Electric Motorsport has the ability to produce a high quality
Solar Car, but needs the financial, technical and logistical support of our
sponsors to make it all possible.
Below we have listed our budget for the project.
