THE ASCLEPIAN VOICE
THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE ORDER OF ASCLEPIUS : WEST VISAYAS STATE UNIVERSITY—COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

MARCH 27, 2015

VOLUME 1 ISSUE NO.4

C

ircumcision is a relatively
common surgical procedure
in
the
Philippines,
especially among schoolage boys. Aside from its medical benefits,
it is mainly viewed as a rite of passage
which signifies that a boy is becoming a
man. Boys who are uncircumcised at a
certain age fear of being ostracized by
their peers which further contributes to the
fact that the procedure is an essential part
of a Filipino man’s life. Because it is quite
expensive, especially for low income
families, during summer time ‘Operation
Tuli’ are being conducted left and right.
As part of the enrichment series for the
community extension programs of the
Order of Asclepius, the resident members
organized
a
seminar-workshop
on
circumcision cyst excision at Room 202,
Roxas Hall, West Visayas State University
on March 26, 2015. The latter topic has
been included as it provides an alternative
avenue for the resident members to hone
their clinical skills and equip them with the
essentials so that they will be prepared.
Furthermore, the need to include the said
topic is due to the increasing opportunities
to perform benign cyst excisions during
surgical missions. Overall, the activity
sought to increase the knowledge and
skills of the resident members on the said
topics
with
emphasis
on
basic
instrumentations, maneuvers and other
surgical considerations.

Senior Master Asclepian Jeffrey
Millan Jr. gave a presentation on the
basic instruments used for both
circumcision and cyst excision. He also
mentioned the instrumentation used in
the ideal setting as well as those used in
actual practice during surgical missions.
Dr. Gregorio Anastacio Rufon Jr., is
an enthusiastic and active member of the
Order of Asclepius. He is part of the very
foundation which sets the organization an
exemplar of service. He consistently
supports the organization through
educational endeavours such as this one
as well partnerships during various
surgical missions.
The first part of the activity was the
seminar on circumcision. Dr. Rufon first
discussed
the
various
maneuvers
including
proper
positioning
and
preparation
of
the
patient.
He
emphasized
the
importance
of
willingness of both the patient to be
circumcised as well as the one
performing
the
procedure.
He
highlighted the need to maintain good
aseptic technique even during surgical
missions. Dr. Rufon also elaborated on
the surgical techniques employed
emphasizing on the importance of
adequate anesthesia and hemostasis as
well as handling cases of phimosis and
pseudophimosis. Lastly, he reminded the
participants of the importance of
post-operative medications as well as

home instructions on wound care.
The next part was on cyst excision. Dr.
Rufon discussed the different types of cysts
highlighting the types most commonly
encountered during surgical missions.
Furthermore, he discussed the basic
concepts
which
includes
adequate
positioning & draping, asepsis, analgesia,
suture selection & technique as well as
proper dressing, post-operative and home
care.
After the theoretical component of the
activity, Dr. Rufon demonstrated the proper
techniques for both circumcision and
benign cyst excision. This was followed by
the return-demonstration among the
resident members, especially among those
who had limited or no prior experience on
the said procedures. The activity also
provided an avenue for members of Batch
37 and 38 to interact and learn from each
other.
Activities such as surgical missions
which are conducted and participated by
the Order of Asclepius not only seek to
provide assistance to our fellow Filipinos
who are in need of competent medical
services but it also creates an opportunity
to elevate the level of clinical competence
among the resident members. But most
importantly, it seeks to foster camaraderie
and unity among the members as brothers
and sisters. And that is something that
gives us the edge and makes us cut above
the rest. #
