THE ASCLEPIAN VOICE
THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE ORDER OF ASCLEPIUS : WEST VISAYAS STATE UNIVERSITY—COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

APRIL 5, 2015

VOLUME 1 ISSUE NO. 6

B

esides the colourful eggs
and the fabled, German
cousin of Bugs Bunny, what
else tangibly symbolizes

Easter?
For a group of medical students,
yellow
boats
could
be
one
meaningful addition.
Led by the organization I CAN
Make A Difference – Iloilo, four
resident OA members and three
other volunteers celebrated Easter,
April 5, together with the residents of
Brgy. Manipulon, Estancia Iloilo, one
of the severely hit populations during
the onslaught of Typhoon Yolanda in
2013. They were the chosen
beneficiaries of the 10 yellow boats
and one 50-seater school boat
donated by the Yellow Boat of Hope
Foundation.
Call it a manifestation of their faith,
or their response from a call to
action, or perhaps, a simple getaway
from the stillness of the Lenten
season, but whatever the team’s
motivations maybe for volunteering,
at the end of the day, what remained
clear as the waters of that islandbarangay was that, they have added
another hue in the typical Easter
Sunday life of the people who
jubilantly waited for their coming.
“Today’s inauguration ceremony,
which so happened to take place at
the time of Jesus’s resurrection, is
indeed a symbol of hope for each
one of us,” said Meghan Lamprea,
incoming AMSA President & member
of Batch 37, in her opening prayer.
Started July 2014, the project aimed
to help a number of fishermen who
lost their livelihood to the typhoon. It
also sought to replace the service
boat used by pupils to go to school in

a nearby island.
“When we first visited the place,
everything was in shambles, even the
hopes of the people who didn’t know
where to begin picking up the pieces,”
said Mitz Serofia, one of the core team
members of I CAN.
But with the help of sponsors from
New Zealand, enough funds were
raised for the construction of the
fishing boats and the floating school
bus.
Now, nine months after the initial
visit, a yellow-tinged kind of hope is
ready to sail in this remote islandbarangay in the far north.
Besides the inauguration, the group
also offered basic medical services
such as blood pressure taking.
“We found out that almost half of
those whose BP was taken were
hypertensive. Some don’t know their
condition,
while
some
have
uncontrolled hypertension because
they lack means to buy their
medications. Something has to be done
eventually,” said Loi Del Rosario of
Batch 38.
The
volunteers
also
offered
entertainment to a deluge of kids in the
place through Easter Egg Hunting and
other games.
They were also asked to write their
dreams on a yellow piece of paper
which was later on constructed into
small paper boats and were then set to
temporarily float to the sea.
“Resources maybe limited in the
place, but dreams are never scarce,”
said Mark Emmanuel Balag of Batch 37
who offered his photography skills to
the cause.
If there is a grown-up Christmas
wish, this must probably be a
grown-up’s Easter Sunday fix. #
