Dear Representative,
We are writing to ask for your support for Senate Joint Resolution (“SJR”) 19, a measure to prohibit the
state’s expenses from exceeding its revenue. This resolution would be a permanent part of Indiana
law as an amendment to our state’s constitution. We support this effort to codify the state’s current
practice of balancing the budget, a mantra that many of our members must follow each day as
they manage their own businesses.
Hoosier policymakers have developed a sound tradition of budgeting sensibly and cautiously
spending our state reserves. These choices have led to increased economic growth for the state,
a better credit rating, and lower taxes for companies and individuals, making Indiana the envy of
many other states. Job creation and economic opportunity are the key to maintaining the quality
of life Hoosiers have come to expect, as well as a lure for the best and the brightest from outside our
borders to consider making our state their home here. We support SJR 19 as a way to permanently
ensure that Indiana remains a fiscal leader in the Midwest and a great place for people to call home.
We respectfully request your thoughtful consideration of this constitutional amendment.
