Step Down Tony Press Release
For immediate release
Petition to withdraw sex offender from PSU student
election gathers 3000 signatures
Portland, OR (April 22, 2015) — A petition calling for Tony Funchess to withdraw from the
Portland State University student government elections has reached 3000 signatures in less than a
week. The petition, titled
Step Down, Tony
, calls for Funchess to withdraw his candidacy for student
body President in light of his history of violent and sexual offenses, which includes several arrests for
domestic violence as well as two cases involving sex with minors.
The petition states: “We believe it would be inappropriate for a repeat sexual offender to hold
the position of ASPSU President, a role which requires that you represent the student voice regarding
the crisis of sexual assault on college campuses.” As of Wednesday, April 22nd, the petition has
received over 3000 signatures.
Romain Bonilla is a graduate of PSU, where he served on the Student Fee Committee, and one
of the organizers of
Step Down, Tony
. “This shows how important of an issue this is,” he says, “and
seeing how far some of these signatures have come from, people are looking to PSU to see how they
handle this issue, and looking to Tony to do the right thing and step down from the election.”
The
Step Down, Tony
petition comes in the midst of controversy surrounding the Portland State
University student body elections. Last week, fliers circulated on campus decried Funchess’s criminal
history, which prompted coverage from multiple news outlets, including OPB, KATU, and
OregonLive.
Arrest records and court documents confirm the allegations against Tony Funchess, who pled
guilty to “attempted rape II for an incident in 2000, and sodomy in the third degree based on an incident
in 2005.” According to Oregon statutes, the charge of Attempted Rape II is defined as “sexual
intercourse with [a person] under 14 years of age.” The charge of Sodomy III is defined as “deviate
sexual intercourse with another person under 16 years of age.” Tony Funchess was 23 years old at the
time of the first incident, and 28 years old at the time of the second.
