Fabijoniškių Socialinių Paslaugų Namai
Fabijoniskiu Socialiniu Paslaugu Namai (hereafter in this document referred to as
The center) is a governmental daycare center specializing in taking care of the senior
citizens. The center provides daycare services for the elderly people whose children are
too busy and unable to take care of them due to their works. There are 2 groups of clients
in the center which are the independent group and the dependent group. The independent
group includes the clients who can work and take care of themselves independently while
the other group consists of those who have Alzheimer and are unable to work and take
care of themselves independently.
Activities in the center vary from physical and manual activities to mental ones.
The clients here can join in activities such as crafting, painting, board-games and solving
crosswords, etc…They also participate in physical training an hour per day. One of the
significant activities is that the clients bring their own photos from the youth here to
present them, tell their own stories as well as to help them recall the memory.
The social workers here take different responsibilities. They every day take the
clients to the garden for a walk, solve crossword and do crafting with them and give them
physical training. There is also a psychiatrist who gives consultation to the clients’
children on health issues of their parents. Social workers also observe the clients’
medication when needed. Besides, they are responsible for administrative works such as
preparing documents and projects for funding, planning budget, etc… The social workers
here contact directly with the clients, every client has his own worker. Sometimes, the
workers also organize self-support group to help them reflect their own progress.
I was impressed by the coziness of environment in the center and the attentive care
of the social workers here, the senior clients are also really lovely and they seem enjoying
their stay. In Vietnam, nursing home or daycare center for the elderly is still a new
concept because most old people prefer to stay with their children and grandchildren and
it is undeniably the tradition of reunion of Vietnam. In nursing home, sometimes they feel
lonely and they would like to spend time with their children. Therefore, there is still a
debate whether it is the inevitable trend or the filial impiety when the children bring their

parents to the nursing homes. But still it is acceptable when the children are too busy to
take care of their parents 24/7. There are several nursing homes in Vietnam and the
number is starting to grow because in next dozen years, the population of Vietnam will be
considered the old population.
I consider myself able to work with this target group because in my opinion, the
elderly are someone for young people to look up to. They went through things that we
never experience, they know things that we do not know and they deserve to be treated
with respect. I also enjoy listening to their stories when they were young and
spontaneous, like I usually listen to my grandmother’s story even though she repeats it 45 times within an hour
