Actuators Applications in Hydraulics
Although none desires a devastating war or similar conflicts, they do give scope for the emergence of
numerous innovative scientific concepts and technological innovations. Evident are the remarkable
instances of rapid development witnessed in the aviation and armament industry in the course of World
War II. The technology of hydraulics revolutionised various controls related to aero-dynamics such as
the applications in the functioning of ailerons in combat aircraft with hydraulic booster systems. Of
course, ultimately all these developments have found extensive peace time usage.
In hydraulics engineering, the conversion of electrical energy to mechanical energy is done by the
actuator and vice versa. Examples are step-motors, induction motors, relay, magnetical valves etc. Thus
the progress of hydraulic engineering in aeronautics resulted in the design, development and
application of electro hydraulic actuator, EHA in short. It is a compact self-contained, bi-directional
DC motor driven pump with an integral hydraulic cylinder.
By and large, its main features are:
Double-acting hydraulic cylinder with appropriate stroke lengths
Factors of Pressure, Force and Speed
Reversible gear pump enclosed in reservoir to avoid contamination
DC Motor with relevant voltage rating
Based on its principle, the ‘fly-by-wire’ technique was evolved and incorporated in the huge transport
aircraft like Airbus and Boeing. Further research and development have led to application of optics
technology and today it is the mode of ‘fly-by-light’. These systems are based on techniques like the
hydraulic supply system, the valves, the actuators and the inter-linked control network. In terms of cost,
comparatively, the high dynamic properties of an electric actuator are very good.
