Kelp Grid Associated With
MRD 168:084 Stone Fish Trap
Description
Immediately to the south and abutting the Stone Fish Trap MRD 168:084 is a Kelp Grid, the
alignments are not perfect and are best seen from the wall of the Fish Trap. The grid is enclosed
on three sides, at the north by the fish tarp, on the west (sand) by a partial kerb wall and on the
south by a raised bank which is heavily covered by mussels and may be a built feature. The grid
runs for 110m N/S, starting at the south the grid is 15-20m wide for 90m the widens to 33m for the
remainder.
The variation on the straight forward grid layout is interesting as it gives a hint of its creator, from
what I can make out the outer three rows swing out and then straighten again to form an inverted
‘h’ against the fish trap. The resulting hollow is filled with short straight lines.
