THE ASCLEPIAN VOICE
THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE ORDER OF ASCLEPIUS : WEST VISAYAS STATE UNIVERSITY—COLLEGE OF MEDICINE
JUNE 28, 2015
VOLUME 1 ISSUE NO. 32
T
Article by: John Ramel Rafael
he end of classes in March last school year meant it
was time to put our books back into the shelves,
keep our multi-colored pens and highlighters, and
put to rest our trusty printers who were already
overworked form the tons of notes and acad-related
paperworks we had to finish. But alas, while most of us were
ready to let their skin be kissed by the scorching summer heat
or apply generous amounts of sunscreen that were already
begging to go out of the drawers they were stored for quite
some time, some of us readied their bp apparatuses and
placed their suturing skills to the test.
For the Order of Asclepius, summer meant mixing business
with pleasure. And with the recent academic shift, that meant
three months of fun and service. Members of the Order
embarked on an opportunity of a lifetime, participating in
various medical and surgical missions that put their
knowledge, skills, and endurance to the test. We got the
opportunity to meet and help people from all walks of life from
the most remote villages to the most scenic of places. In some
ways, we had the most comprehensive tour of the Visayas
region, participating in a number of service-oriented activities
in the province of Iloilo, covering virtually all municipalities of
Antique and other places, including island barangays in the
West Visayas. We even crossed waters as our activities
covered several key cities and municipalities in the newly
formed Negros Island Region, and some of our members in
Mindanao joined in such events. Truly, no commercial tour
package can offer the experience one gathers from this.
In a span of almost three months, we are able to help
circumcise almost 5,300 individuals and provided medical
assistance in the form of medications and consultations to 3,300
pediatric and adult individuals. Furthermore we were able to
conduct a number of seminars and participate in other
socio-civic endeavours which sought to render service to our
countrymen.
As we ready for the new academic year, expect that the
Order of Asclepius will continue to promote excellence in
community service. We endeavour to share and apply to the
university and the community what we have learned in the four
corners of Roxas Hall. In behalf of the Order, I thank all
Asclepian brothers and sisters as well as our partner
organization for the continued support that they have given the
resident members. For nearly four decades, the Order of
Asclepius takes pride in being socially relevant and in
fostering brotherhood and sisterhood in Medicine through
service. FRATER. MEDICA. SERVIA. #
