Edge Underground is an Australian trenchless
technology subcontractor with extensive
experience on both domestic and international
projects. Led by Stuart Harrison, the inventor of
the Vermeer AXIS guided boring system, we are
known not only for our countless successful high precision sewer and water installations, but as
a technological innovator with a passion for success.

Edge Underground offer expert directional drilling techniques to ensure your
microtunnelling job is done properly.

Before founding Edge Underground, Stuart Harrison worked for over 25 years as contractor
involved in the installation of sewer and water pipelines via various open cut and trenchless
Not satisfied that any of the existing solutions represented the optimum combination of high
efficiency, productivity and pinpoint precision, Stuart began developing his own guided boring
system. In 2002, the patented AXIS guided boring system was completed. This revolutionary
system provides a versatile pit-launched trenchless pipeline installation method which enables
pinpoint, on grade accuracy without the productivity sacrifices associated with other precision
installation methods.
In 2006, Vermeer Corporation reached an agreement with Harrison to acquire his patented
technology. In the time since, Vermeer has worked to further refine the Vermeer AXIS guided
boring system and distribute it to wider markets.
Company founder, Stuart Harrison, had over 25 years of experience installing sewer and water
pipelines before developing the AXIS guided boring system.

Over the first three years after the AXIS guided boring system was developed, Stuart’s company
built five units and used them to successfully install several hundred thousand feet of sewer
and water lines.
Since then, Edge Underground has completed an extensive range of domestic and international
pipeline projects, specialising in complicated gravity sewer and water main installations
requiring absolute on grade precision in varied and changing ground conditions.

The Vermeer AXIS guided boring system is a vacuum microtunnelling system invented by a
subcontractor with extensive industry and project experience. As a result, it is designed with an
understanding of the challenges and requirements of high accuracy gravity sewer and water
main installation.
The Vermeer AXIS guided boring system is versatile enough to install pipeline of various
diameters in a wide range of ground conditions, without compromising on accuracy or
production. The ability to change the head and cutter style or configuration to deal with
changing ground conditions also gives the AXIS system an edge over other precision horizontal
boring techniques.

Our Vermeer AXIS guided boring system maintains the strict tolerance and accuracy vital for
absolute precision sewer and water installations, providing optimum precision, efficiency and
When you chose Edge Underground as your microtunnelling subcontractor our crews and
equipment are set up to allow for multiple configurations on site. We are also self-contained,
have our own crane and work hard to mobilise on site with minimal fuss.
We pride ourselves in offering state of the art technology (such as the Vermeer AXIS guided
boring system) combined with the expert knowledge.

Edge Underground is a precision microtunnelling contractor with bases in Victoria, New South
Wales and Queensland. We subcontract to principal contractors throughout Australia on a large
range of projects, big or small.
Our founder, Stuart Harrison, has decades of experience in the industry and is also the inventor
of the award-winning Vermeer AXIS guided boring system. Having travelled the world for six
years as a microtunnelling expert working on equipment research, development and
troubleshooting, Stuart is also known as a trenchless expert and innovator with extensive
project experience. Within Australia he is considered a pioneer within the microtunnelling
industry and is one of the construction industry’s most trusted pipeline contractors.
As a result, both our equipment and expertise give us an ‘edge’ over competitors, especially
when it comes to the trenchless installation of gravity sewer and water mains in challenging

These projects have involved installing a wide range of pipe sizes in countless different ground
conditions for various applications. We have a strong track record of working with our clients to
provide innovative and effective solutions to the challenges of the job.
While our customers and their needs are diverse, one thing never changes – our commitment
to the job and the satisfaction of our clients.

Edge Underground is committed to customer satisfaction. Read our testimonials to see what
clients have to say about Stuart Harrison and Edge Underground.
“Stuart Harrison was introduced to me as an Australian driller after working almost 19 years in
the drilling and trenchless industry, mainly as contractor, or directly for the Vermeer
“Somewhere in a desolated desert in the USA, I was invited to have a look at something which
was seen as a
mixture of laser guided boring, microtunnelling and vacuum excavation, as at
that time it wasn’t called AXIS®. After an evaluation of this drilling concept, Vermeer agreed to
acquire the patents and to further develop the system.
“But in the beginning this was just was a concept machine / concept technology, the years to
follow have been a very interesting rollercoaster, traveling from one project to another
throughout the USA, facing all kinds of soil conditions and new challenges. One thing for sure,
Stuart Harrison was there to help out and get his hands dirty. With a mentality of getting the
job done, coming up with (new) solutions and with his background and experience in the
industry he always had a card up his sleeve.
“Slowly time has gone by, and Axis earned its place on the trenchless market.
“It was time to move on, never the less, knowing Stuart Harrison and Edge Underground, he will
always be looking for new trenchless challenges to overcome.
“Having started Edge underground one thing I know for sure, beside Stuart’s experience and
knowledge with the known Trenchless solutions, is that if you face the unknown or unexpected,
Edge Underground will get the job done, and if necessary come up with plenty of solutions to
make it happen.”
