Q: How do I get my spouse/ my
child/ my parent to face the
problem?

A: It is often said that a substance
abuser must “hit bottom” before
he/she can recover. But do we
standby helplessly? In treatment, we
say “bring the bottom up.” Remove
denial from yourself and the addict,
provide consequences you can stick
to, and focus on behaviors you have
heard or witnessed. Reflect on and
stop enabling and focus on taking the
first step of a professional evaluation.
Q: I have tried, I thought I could do
it alone, I can’t. I need help, but
what if everyone finds out?
A: Alcohol and Substance Abuse
Treatment is confidential and federal
laws protect one’s privacy, unless
you elect to release information.
While state and federal laws protect
your medical information by
HIPAA, behavioral health and
substance abuse treatment have an
additional layer of protection that
must specifically be consented to for
sharing treatment information.
Q: Can I use health insurance to pay
for treatment?
A: We are participating providers for
HMSA, UHA, Kaiser Preferred, and
HMAA. Call to inquire for all others.
