Ishinomaki Playground Project
Ishinomaki Playground
Designed the logo and
promotional materials
for this Tsunami relief
project. Created the logo
by drawing inspiration
from Japanese design
elements and the city’s
prefectural flag.

The city of Ishinomaki in northern Japan was hard-hit by the earthquake and tsunami
of March 11, 2011. In the two years since, cleanup and reconstruction have moved
along rapidly, but there are still no playspaces for children and their families.
Seventh-generation Japanese ceramic artist Ikuhiko Shibata has volunteered to
create limited-edition mugs, tea bowls and other artwork for sale. All proceeds will
help pay for building a much needed playground, custom designed by students at
UC's College of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning.

Turning Over a New Leaf・November 2013

From the National Representatives

Happy autumn everyone!
My name is Aimee
Wenyue Chen and I am
in my 3rd year at the
Yamanashi Prefectural
Office. The opposite of
this season’s edition, I was
born a spring baby in my
hometown of Nanchang,
China. Though I grew up mostly in Los
Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area in
California, I received my American
citizenship one month before I turned in
my JET application. Next step: world
citizenship! Keeping up with the season,
this edition’s theme revolves around
“turning over a new leaf.” Though spring is
the season of “fresh starts” in Japan, many
CIRs arrive at the tail end of summer. It
was with that in mind we had the seasonal
theme. Please read on to enjoy articles from
past and current CIRs on their projects,
experiences, and time on JET. I hope this
will be invigorating and refreshing for all
CIRs and give us momentum for an
exciting “new start!”

Hello everyone! My
name is Mariko Cook
and I am in my second
year as a CIR. I
currently work at
Urasoe City Hall, which
is located on the lovely
island of Okinawa.
Before moving to Japan
for the JET Programme, I lived in Indiana
of the US and studied East Asian Languages
and Cultures at Indiana University. I was
actually born in Okinawa and was
partially raised in various prefectures of
Japan throughout my childhood, so this is
my fifth time living here. Despite having
lived here many years before, there’s still
so much more for me to learn about the
Japanese culture and its people. With a
year’s experience under my belt, I hope to
be able to use that to my advantage for the
upcoming year and help spread more
international awareness at the local level.
I look forward to working with my partners
and the rest of the CIR community here in
Japan for the 2013-2014 year! Can’t wait to
meet all of you at the Mid Year Conference
in November, either. Let’s strive to make
the CIR Network an even better one!

Mark Simpson and
have recently taken
over the role of
webmaster for the
homepage. In August
I entered my 4th year
in the JET program,
based at the Shizuoka
Prefectural Office, and originate from the
Land of the Long White Cloud (read: New
Zealand). If you have any suggestions of

心機一転

皆様、よい秋の日をお
過ごしでしょうか。私
はエイミー・ウェンユ
エ・チェンと申しま
す。山梨県庁に勤務し
ており、今年で三年目
になりました。今の季
節とは違って、私はふ
るさとの南昌市で花が
咲き舞う季節の中で生まれました。そ
の後、アメリカに移住しロサンゼルス
とサンフランシスコ周辺で育ちました
が、実際にアメリカの国民になったの
はJET申請書を提出する一ヶ月前でし
た。そしてこれからの計画は？世界の
国民になること！
さて、今回のニュースレターのテーマ
は『Turning Over a New Leaf』、つ
まり、心を入れ替えるという「心機一
転」とのことです。日本では、春が「
新しいスタート」の印象が強いです
が、CIRの大部分は夏の終る頃に来日
するので今回のテーマを選びました。

皆さん、こんにち
は！私はマリコ・
クックと言います。
国際交流員として2
年目で、現在は素敵
な島の沖縄の浦添
市役所で働いていま
す。JETプログラム
で日本に来る前は、
アメリカのインディアナ州に住んでい
て、インディアナ大学にて東アジア言
語と文化を勉強しました。実は、私は
沖縄で生まれて、日本の様々な都道府
県で育ったので、今回は日本に住むの
が5回目です。ここに数年間住んでいた
にも関わらず、日本の文化や人々に関
してまだまだ知識が足りません。1年間
の経験を基にこれからもローカルなレ
ベルからもっと国際的な意識を広げよ
うと思います。
2013年から2014年の1年間、パートナ
ーとCIRのコミュニティーと共に活動
するのを楽しみにしています！11月の
中間研修で皆さんと会うのも楽しみで
す。CIRネットワークをより良く改良す
るために頑張りましょう！
