We start with careful observation. Our initial study collects baseline data on
existing and historic conditions. This data also helps us monitor the site
over time. We map and analyze the watershed within which we are
working to have a comprehensive understanding of influencing factors, land
use practices, and the regional setting.
Our designs are robust and blend with nature. We use local materials of willow, woody debris, and rock to construct
bioengineered structures that both create habitat and prevent erosion. After a few years, our habitat restoration projects
blend with nature, appearing to be a healthy ecosystem, undistinguishable from the native environment.
Cultivation of a successful native plant community is one of the most challenging
aspects of habitat restoration. To become established, plants require the right
conditions, protection, and resources. Irrigation is especially challenging on many
sites. Ridge to River has established a variety of species in diverse habitats,
including rip arian corridors, coastal bluffs, and upland meadows and forests.
We offer comprehensive watershed services, from analysis and modeling to
restoration, hydrologic design, and project implementation. Our work improves
habitat and water quality, stabilizes banks and roads, and provides information
for decision making.
Our projects are diverse - we serve
as a laison for landowners and
government; work with engineers, geologists and foresters; draft designs
for stormwater and erosion control; and build wetlands and bioengineered
erosion control structures for bank failures, slides, and gullies.
Water flows through the earth, transporting everything, especially
contaminants like sediment from erosion and oils and heavy metals from
auto-mobiles.We help restore the ecosystem, improve water quality, and
create beautiful landscapes in the process.
We use hydrology, ecology and construction to re-build ecosystems that
benefit humans and wildlife and result in water quality and biodiversity.
We start with a site analysis to varify that what we see on the ground matches maps
and data. We look for a chronology of land use events that resulted in the current
condition and imagine what it was like prior to human influence.
We take an integrative approach to watershed analysis. In addition to collecting
diverse, quantitative field data we conduct qualitative visual surveys, examine local index populations and habitats, assess historical
records, and provide statistical analysis.
We conduct a thorough examination, taking care in our selection of monitoring protocols. We provide simple yet robust research
design, an invaluable foundation for sound analysis. We have often applied such techniques in assessing trends and effectiveness of
ecological restoration and watershed management. In many cases past research and visual surveys can be solely relied upon to
address land use issues. We retain the knowledge and expertise to decide when, where, and if a study would be appropriate.

Our road designs save money on maintenance because they get water off the
road quickly, before it can do damage by eroding the road surface. They also
save salmon by preventing erosion - the leading cause of the demise of
salmon in the pacific Northwest.
Over the last decade we have worked with Mendocino County Resource Conservation District, California Department of
Fish and Game, the Bureau of Land Management, California Department of Fire and Forestry Protection, California State Parks
and Recreation, the Sate Coastal Conservancy, local towns and cities, and over 100 private landowners including
timber companies, ranchers, watershed residents, and conservation trusts.
