THE ASCLEPIAN VOICE
THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE ORDER OF ASCLEPIUS : WEST VISAYAS STATE UNIVERSITY—COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

AUGUST 21, 2015

VOLUME 1 ISSUE NO. 34

PAINTING THE TOWN RED: OA HOSTS
ANNUAL BLOOD FOR GLORY
Article by: Jesher Joshua Arsenio

A

ugust 19, Wednesday
-- It was another
eventful
day
for
the
Order
of
Asclepius as willing blood donors
from in and around the West
Visayas State University gathered
at Roxas Hall to participate in
this year's Blood for Glory. The
event is the Order's annual
in-house blood-letting drive, as
well as being one of its longestrunning
medical
service
programs.
A total of 37 blood units were
collected from donors throughout
the drive that started at 7:30 in the
morning and ended at 5:00 in the
afternoon. Donors went through
standard pre-donation procedures
such as a comprehensive patient
interview, blood typing, and an

assessment of vital signs before
undergoing with the donation.
The blood drive also brought
together donors from all walks
of
life;
students,
teachers,
professionals, laborers, and many
other different concerned citizens
all chimed in towards the Order's
cause.
Lennon Ponta-oy, a first year
medical student and one of the
donors of this year's drive, was
eager in sharing his experience in
this year's Blood for Glory.
"It was really fun donating
blood, especially when you know
it's going towards people who
badly need it. Siyempre medyo
tiring ang feeling after, pero
knowing that you are helping
someone in need makes it all worth
it," Ponta-oy said.

The College of Medicine also
received a Platinum Award from
the
Philippine
National
Red
Cross Head Office in the drive
for donating a total of 591 blood
units in 12 years. This year
marks
the
College's
13th
consecutive
year of being in
service to the people of Western
Visayas by being a source of
usable blood for hospitals around
the region.
All in all, this year's Blood for
Glory was a success. If the day
proved anything true, it was that
heroes really can come from all
blood types and walks of life.
The event was made possible in
partnership with the Philippine Red
Cross - Western Visayas Regional
Blood Center of Iloilo City and the
College of Medicine. #
