Arab media revolution
And Means of Transforming the Arab civil Society
Dr. Mustapha Qassim
Researcher of Educational Policies in the National Center for Educational and Development
Research in Cairo
This study examines the implications of the technological innovations in mass media
and information and their reflections on the Arab civil society. It also examines the ability of
these innovations to create a ‘cultural shift’ that leads to a cultural transfer of the sort that
produces modernity and civil society, or what might be called "the civil transformation."
This, of course, is not possible without putting these possible media influences in the context
of the Arab social and political reality with its current events and transformations. Therefore,
prior to that, it was necessary to present, in some detail, the impact of the technological
innovations in mass media on the civil society development in Europe throughout the modern
era, or to present the impact of those technological innovations on the biggest well-known
transformation in the European history. This transformation has influential consequences on
the entire world that is manifest in the shift to modernity which culminated in the formation
of the civil society. A number of important distinctions in this subject will be brought out
wherever relevant in the study.
