On a visit to a ship yard or a harbour, it is astonishing to watch those huge heavy lifts at the docks in
operation to load, carry and discharge large and often unusual shaped cargoes that will simply not fit
inside the holds of conventional vessels and yet place them appropriately. Likewise, lifting the
containers and loading them perfectly on the decks of container vessels. The driving force behind all
these tasks is the technology of hydraulics. It is science of utilising a fluid under pressure to transmit
power and to control intricate motions. Indeed, over the past six decades, it has revolutionised the

construction machinery including pile foundation hammers, locomotives, car carriers, missile
launchers in defence services etc.
3. Marine - Ocean going vessels, winches on cargo liners, fishing trawlers, ramp doors and links
between decks, dock leveller etc.
4. Aerospace and Aviation - Ground handling and transmission systems, rudder control, landing
gear, rockets and spaceships.
Almost in each of the above cited applications there is a Mini Hydraulic Power Unit that energises the
operation of the system. Depending on the design (AC or DC) and end usage (single and double acting
applications), it could be to the extent of 6 kW. Thus the tank capacities too vary in a unit. The quality
of the casting in its assembly too has a relevant impact since it joins the gear pump to the drive motor.
Hydraulic engineering companies in India have been carrying out extensive research and development
in mini power pack units. These range from various grades of castings, high temperature resistant and
low friction sealing materials to special alloy steels with low thermal expansions and semi-finished and
pre-finished raw material inputs like pre-honed tubes, induction hardened and chrome plated rods
